It actually was not even a cat 1. It was downgraded before it made landfall here.

I am southern, have been and likely always will be.

However a few things:

The storm was a cat 1 on the saffir simpson scale however it held the pressure of a cat4/5 at landfall.

Had that storm hit NC/VA it would have done a lot of damage, and us Southerners would be in the same situation

The Union armies had from 2,500,000 to 2,750,000 men. Their losses, by the best estimates:

Battle deaths: 110,070
Disease, etc.: 250,152
Total 360,222

The Confederate strength, known less accurately because of missing records, was from 750,000 to 1,250,000. Its estimated losses:

Battle deaths: 94,000
Disease, etc.: 164,000
Total 258,000

While you're correct that more Union died, the percentage killed as a fraction of army size was ~15% for Union, and 25% Confederate. This was largely due to inferior medical service. So basically, the Rebs fought a no-win campaign with inferior manpower, weapons, and medical care. Decide for yourself who was dumb. The whole thing was highly unfortunate, and possibly avoidable.

Far more importantly, we survived despite the efforts of the Euro elite to surreptitiously undermine the young U.S.

It's that way with snow storms and cold too. The Minnesota/Wisconsin/UP will get dumped on with 3 ft of snow followed by 30 below weather (without the windchill), and there will be little or no coverage of it.
