I'm sure most of us are aware of the "Cargo Cults" that got their start in the Pacific during WWII.

That's my theory of human earth religion. There was an intergalactic war a looong time ago and Terra was an outpost. The alien ships would come from the sky and bring all kinds of supplies and technology that we were in awe of. Then the war was over and we're left watching the skies for the return of the sky Gods and all their magical "stuff". Just like we're all waiting for the return of the Christ, Buddha, the Great White Buffalo etc.

We're just one big planet wide cargo cult. Simple.
