the deemed site was supposed to be the site for 'permanent disposal', in a world-wide first...
Quoting: Citizenperth What are you talking about? The pool was no permanent storage or disposal (burial) site for uranium. The whole purpose of the pool was to absorb uranium and other trace metals - which are inevitable byproducts of a nickel mine like Talvivaara - in gypsum so that it can be collected and reprocessed later on. Otherwise the nickel mining operation would have just released the uranium and other toxic metals into the nature. The mine has nothing to do with nuclear industry, except that they later discovered that they could make money with the mining waste that they would have collected anyway. So, yes, the pool was shoddily built, but it had a "green" purpose. What else would you have done with the byproducts from nickel production?
