OP you really are pathetic. Is this how you deal with all things in life, by trying to devise means of censoring speech. And a shameless attempt at brown nosing too - you have to be the lamest GLPer ever
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18713240

You're not a pathetic person. Don't believe the lies and the projections of others!

GLP has always been ban-happy, if you offend a mod, instaban.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19202196

But is that banning an individual or a whole bunch of folks who did nothing but use the same internet provider.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23943453

I have publicly disagreed with a mod here before and received a ban within a minute of doing so. I've also had the same kind of response time on a ban after being critical of GLP in general. Some folks are just hyper-sensitive.

Well, then maybe a system where when folks sign up they can declare themselves, liberal, conservative or neutral.

I dunno?

Actually, I'm really trying to propose some solution here, because I don't like banning, though, I can concede that it's an "evil necessity."

If an alternative solution is not reasoned with we can all expect the old banning system to be returned.

Are you aware that a lot of people are banned from GLP already because, presumably, of what they say.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27970216

I rarely post, I learn a lot of whats (truthfully) going on in the world and behind out backs by our corrupt govt. from GLP.

I have been caught up in many IP bans to no fault of my own. I do the email thing and explain that I was caught up in an IP ban. I know that Trin and the mods don't necessairly like to ban a range of IP but,its so unfair to those of us who have done no wrong and are told basicly to bad so sad - you're still banned and it lasts 2 weeks.

Many people can't afford a membership to unban ourselves. There has to be a better way to ban just the offensive IP.

I was caught up in an IP ban and missed Sandy coming in and the elections...I had to depend on MSM for info and we all know how truthful they are.

Well, I tried to bring up an alternative way to empower folks to police others with the "ban bomb," but all the negative commentary just out weighed the positive potential.

The old ban is back.

Oh well.

Well the rules could be changed to make it fair, for example only registered people could use "ban bombs," if you ban bomb too often your anonymity would be given away (it could warn you before that happens).

There really are some very mean spirited folks, and unfortunately negative reinforcement seems the only way to change behavior. It's just too bad the current system seems indiscriminate.

I don't think so.

That sort of system would be abused.

No one has any business banning anyone here aside from the mods.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

You've seen the way people karma-farm around here? The system would simply be abused. People would stock up on ban bombs and drop all 5 at once for even the slightest infringement. Even if you were to limit the number of "bombs" a poster could drop to something like one a day, people would just create multiple accounts and still bombard someone. And if they took a particular dislike to someone, they'd wait for the 72 hours to end and bomb them back to banville.

If the posts being reported aren't viewed as abusive then nothing is done.

What's the problem with people reporting? It helps clean up all the shit that's posted on this site.

What if you can trade your karma points for a "ban bomb" and folks can do the banning, but it would take maybe 5 ban bombs to finally get someone banned and it would be for like three days?

The ban bomber could select choices for reasons why he or she is dropping the bomb on a poster, say "Poster was rude," or "Poster did not do their research," and its non attributable.

And if someone were to get ban bombed they would see a page pop up as a warning saying

"someone has ban bombed you. Four more bombs and you'll be banned for 72 hours. You should try to be nicer" or "you should try to be smarter"

Oh and just to be cute, under the person's name could be little bomb icons for how many hits he or she has taken (red bombs) and another for how many are in their arsenal (green bombs), hahahaha.

Also, the hits a person has taken should reset to zero if they managed to be good long enough (maybe two weeks?)and not take any more hits

What do you think Trin?

so how about we just leave banning in the hands of those who actually are aware of what is considered a "legitimate banning offense"? i've been banned more than a few times, some "autobans" for using the forbidden words unknowingly, some bans for using "non pc" words in a non-hateful context (like the name of a mark twain character), for posting content that could be considered subversively inciting, and for reasons i honestly have no clue about. i use the ban removal request, and bingo, im back on within a couple of hours. i dont see how giving the ability to ban others to agenda driven cliques is going to be an improvement.

Well, ban bombs wouldn't out right ban them, its getting too many of them that would get them banned.

I guess it would be like getting too much bad karma...maybe you're right.

I can see how folks would act wreckless and irresponsible if they had such a power.

Hey, do you suppose that is how elitist thinks, i.e. "aw the children can't handle it, best not give it to them"?

intolerant pricks who want to own the forum for their own agendas and shit on top of whoever disagrees ....

Dumb. I prefer randomly banning people for no reason so they will pay the $10 a month to get unbanned.

But the best solution is to do away with free access entirely and start out with the $10 a month charge. Then once the membership is high, you can then add a larger selection of levels of ban protection, for example:

$10 - 5 day maximum ban
$20 - 2 day maximum ban
$30 - total ban protection

Once the customers get used to that menu of choices, later you can add an even larger selection of choices for the customer!

Every time I look at this site these days there's some asshat saying bans are the answer.

A better way is have more Mods. I know about the problems GLP has had with mods in the past but surely it beats making the board a joke with constant bans and some half assed version of See Something See Something.

Not sure I like that idea. A lot of times it's "personal" and it would be a tit for tat kind of deal.

I am all for banning, except for the mass, random bannings.
