The number 108 is very significant to the practice of mantra because, in Vedic and Tantric traditions, a mantra is repeated 108 times. This is thought to be a special number of repetitions, much more powerful than 107 or 109 repetitions, for instance. In other words, mantra is considered to be most effective using sets of 108 repetitions. The Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sihk, Islamic and Taoist religions all use a string of prayer beads, usually called a mala, that have 108 beads or knots. The Christian rosary also derives from these malas, with 54 beads (not counting the 'tail').


Let us now look at some of the 'sacred' numbers that pertain specifically to 108. Two of the roots or factors of 108 are 9 and 12. Curiously, when you add up the digits that constitute almost all of the numbers listed above , they add up to nine. (Try adding them yourself.) The number nine is also significant in that it is the number of digits in our decimal system, not counting zero.
Twelve may be the most significant of all numbers, and is the basis of a phenomenon sometimes called the 'Law of Octaves.' This law and others have been referred to in ancient writings and traditions such as Tantra, alchemy, Hermetic magic, Qabala and shamanic rituals. For some reason, energy often subdivides in divisions of twelve. In fact, twelve is a number that appears over and over in many contexts, in many cultures throughout history. Some of the more common contexts are: twelve months in the year, twelve signs of the Zodiac, twelve hours on a clock-face, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve gods in the Greek pantheon, and twelve apostles surrounding Jesus (who would be the thirteenth). There are far too many examples to list here.
It is noted that if a sphere (picture a ping pong ball) had other equal sized spheres perfectly packed around it, each of them touching all of the spheres next to it, there would be twelve such spheres. The one in the center would be the thirteenth. In music, an octave contains twelve separate notes (both white and black keys on a piano). It is just the natural way that energy divides itself, in a variety of forms. Many bodies of mystical knowledge further claim that there are twelve realms or levels of reality. The one we call the physical, material realm is said to be the third level, the third 'note' in this grand octave.
The number 108 comes up in a variety of contexts. There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has a masculine/feminine or shiva/shakti aspect: 54 x 2 is 108. On the sacred geometrical configuration know as the Sri Yantra, there are points called marmas where three lines intersect, and there are 54 such intersections. Each intersection also has masculine/feminine or shiva/shakti qualities.

In the human body, marmas or marmastanas are energy intersections similar to charkas. There are said to be 108 marmas in the subtle body. Also, it is said that there are a total of 108 main energy lines or nadis that radiate from the heart chakra. Thus, the number 108 relates to the Sri Yantra as well as the human body.

The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. In the Krishna tradition, there were said to be 108 gopis or maidservants of Krishna. There are 108 forms of traditional Indian dance. In the Vedas there are 108 Upanishads as listed in the Muktikopanishad. There is said to be 108 Tantric texts. Ancient texts say that the Atman, the human soul, passes through 108 different stages on its path to enlightenment. The list goes on and on.

It may be very difficult to know, in a logical way, why 108 repetitions of a mantra enhances its efficacy. It may in fact be impossible to explain this number's significance in a scientific way. The ancient mystics certainly held it in high esteem. They would say that the number 108 is in sync with the rhythms of time and space. When we use 108 repetitions of a mantra we are saluting the order of the universe and aligning our intentions with the divine will. Said another way, we are harmonizing our personal vibrations with the natural vibrations of creation.

Just wanted to drop in and say that I told my niece about the peripheral vision thing that you two have in common.

She thought it was really cool that you two were both sleepwalkers and you also had that in common.

She also said that sometimes the figures are darker, but usually they are white.

Jonny thank you for letting me know that you shared with her. I am 50 . I have had a grey one that I see periodically but was informed it is a pet that I dearly loved and lost . I was there for his first breath and last as he died in my arms. He was black in color . It may be a past pet she has had or something of a similar nature. It also depends on the perception she has of the darker ones. Above all else tell her not to fall into fear of what the darker ones are. They need that vibration of love that transforms also.

She said she often dreams of zombies...dreams that used to be nightmares. However, she told me that recently she is able to alter her dream-state when she feels the dream is turning into a zombie dream.

She says that now instead of waking up in a panic, she simply changes the dream to something else.

Even though I know little of dreams, I told her that I suspect that what she can expect in the future is to have a dream where she is in the room that she fell asleep with, where she would be confronted with her physical body.

When I ran into a similar situation during a dream my universal guide reminded me of the story Beauty and the Beast ... Unconditional love. She can also use laughter in the dream as it is a condensed form of Love. It has everything to do with vibrations. For her it is a test for her to be able to traverse higher realms . There are guardians she will have to go around or thru just like the levels in a video game where at the end of the level you have a monster to over come like in the legend of Zelda . She will do fine. It is all a process of maturation of the psyche ... Aristotle( treatise of the soul), Carl Jung talks about these things and archetypes that must be overcome to reach higher levels.

The Indian Subcontinent rosary or set of mantra counting has 108 beads. 108 has been a sacred number in the Indian Subcontinent for a very long time. This number is explained in many different ways.

The ancient Indians were excellent mathematicians and 108 may be the product of a precise mathematical operation (e.g. 1 power 1 x 2 power 2 x 3 power 3 = 108) which was thought to have special numerological significance.

Powers of 1, 2, and 3 in math: 1 to 1st power=1; 2 to 2nd power=4 (2x2); 3 to 3rd power=27 (3x3x3). 1x4x27=108

Heart Chakra: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of them, sushumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to Self-realization.

Marmas: Marmas or marmastanas are like energy intersections called chakras, except have fewer energy lines converging to form them. There are said to be 108 marmas in the subtle body.

Time: Some say there are 108 feelings, with 36 related to the past, 36 related to the present, and 36 related to the future.

Astrology: There are 12 constellations, and 9 arc segments called namshas or chandrakalas. 9 times 12 equals 108. Chandra is moon, and kalas are the divisions within a whole.

Planets and Houses: In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 times 9 equals 108.

Gopis of Krishna: In the Krishna tradition, there were said to be 108 gopis or maid servants of Krishna.

1, 0, and 8: 1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for infinity or eternity.

Sun and Earth: The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.

Numerical scale: The 1 of 108, and the 8 of 108, when added together equals 9, which is the number of the numerical scale, i.e. 1, 2, 3 ... 10, etc., where 0 is not a number.

Smaller divisions: The number 108 is divided, such as in half, third, quarter, or twelfth, so that some malas have 54, 36, 27, or 9 beads.

Islam: The number 108 is used in Islam to refer to God.

Jain: In the Jain religion, 108 are the combined virtues of five categories of holy ones, including 12, 8, 36, 25, and 27 virtues respectively.

Sikh: The Sikh tradition has a mala of 108 knots tied in a string of wool, rather than beads.

Chinese: The Chinese Buddhists and Taoists use a 108 bead mala, which is called su-chu, and has three dividing beads, so the mala is divided into three parts of 36 each.

Stages of the soul: Said that Atman, the human soul or center goes through 108 stages on the journey.

Meru: This is a larger bead, not part of the 108. It is not tied in the sequence of the other beads. It is the quiding bead, the one that marks the beginning and end of the mala.

Dance: There are 108 forms of dance in the Indian traditions.

Pythagorean: The nine is the limit of all numbers, all others existing and coming from the same. ie: 0 to 9 is all one needs to make up an infinite amount of numbers.

In other words, each one of us carries the reminiscent memory cells of at least 108 previous incarnations, which constitutes the body of our incarnational selves. Inside of this essentially holographic template is stored the repository of the emotional and spiritual involvements that your Soul may have experienced and have retained the impression of, but that needed to be cleansed and integrated in order to continue the spiritual evolution.

The Buddhism tradition talks about the 108 earthly desires in mortals, 108 lies humans tell and 108 human delusions.


The esoteric presence of the number 108 can be seen in various spiritual practices and theories: In Kriya Yoga, the maximum number of repetitions allowed to be practiced in one sitting is 108. Also, 108 Sun Salutations in yoga practice is often used to honor change, for example the change of seasons, or at a time of tragedy to bring peace, respect and understanding. It is said that if one can be so calm in meditation practicing pranayama to have only 108 breaths a day that enlightenment will come.


The earth cycle is supposed to be of 2160 years = 20 x 108. The distance between the Earth and Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Sun. The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance between the Earth and Moon is 108 times the diameter of the Moon. The universe is made up of 108 elements according to ancient texts. The current periodic table claims a few more than 108.

There are 12 constellation and 9 arc segments. 9 times 12 equal 108. The 9 planets travelling through the 12 signs constitute the whole of existence. 9 x 12 = 108. The 27 nakshatras or lunar constellations spread over the 4 elements – fire, earth, air, water or the 4 directions – north, south, east, and west. This also constitutes the whole of existence. 27 x 4 = 108.

You missed the important meaning of this number: it is the average number of points, lines & triangles surrounding the axis of a Platonic solid that passes through two opposite vertices.

Subsidiary mathematical divisions are also part of this law, each one a further expression or aspect of the phoenix. A primary subdivision is of each Age into twenty periods of time, each of 108 years. In an earlier discussion, we looked at pair symmetry in the Fu Xi square derived from the primal order circular diagram. You may find it useful to glance over that article, if you haven't already, since this one refers back to the Fu Xi diagrams.

The following images show the King Wen hexagram pairs as they lie on the 108 Cross grid (right), which is derived from the Later Heaven circular arrangement (sometimes called King Wen's circular arrangement).

In these images, a single line joins each hexagram pair, according to the King Wen numbering of all 64 hexagrams. In all these images, the grid has been rotated 45 degrees to display the symmetry. I built the 108 cross grid from left to right while attempting to mimic the circular arrangement, but it's possible it should be mirrored or inverted to be read appropriately. (Chinese writing runs right to left, and hexagrams are built bottom to top. Either way, there are issues in turning a circular diagram into a straight line).

Unlike in Fu Xi, the pair symmetry in King Wen is only vertical, not horizontal. (As long as the upper and lower trigram sequences in the 8x8 grid are identical, some form of symmetry will emerge.) The image below shows perpendicular lines in red, and angled lines in blue.

This time, the chart does reveal an ordering, and a symmetry -- a complete set of nuclear trigrams is found in each distinct quadrant. The same number never appears twice in the same quadrant. The yin-yang mirroring in the clusters of four hexes surrounding the 108 cross is also maintained after the transformation, again providing a central cluster of symmetry -- but still off center from the overall diagram.

Additionally, the two vertical columns down the center axis are perfectly symmetrical, and each row and column has a perfect reflection across the horizontal and vertical axes, although they are not symmetrically arranged.

Clearly, this division of the hexagrams is not random, but it is also lacks a simple, obvious pattern. In fact, the table is similar to the King Wen numerical sequence, because there is clearly a grouping (quadrants in the chart, pairs in the sequence) but the pattern that dictates the grouping remains impenetrable. It may be fractal in nature, in which case a final explanation could prove impossible to discern.

I'm not giving up yet. I will update with whatever additional correspondences I turn up after some additional study of these charts. Based on the complexity of the relationships, I am increasingly certain there is an underlying mathematical-structural explanation for the ordering of the King Wen sequence. I suspect the answer lies in the ba gua diagram...

Oh, yes, the square at the center of the 108 cross? "Joy," No. 58, also known as "Lake." An appropriate hexagram for 108, a number so closely associated with transcendence and nirvana.
