You know how many snakes probably died during the course of the Belgian Congo's existence? Their spirits came back and got all dressed up in their space suits and now we have the Greys.

Now let's say just one deceased Belgian Congo python = 20 Greys. That explains why the sightings picked up in the 50s as the ghosts were gradually processed into Greys.
