Computer problem at Bay Area Rapid Transit causes system-wide shut down
BART Service Temporarily Suspended due to Computer Problems

On Sunday, December 2 at 10:25am, BART has temporarily suspended service due to computer system problems. Trains at stations are being held. Trains between stations are on manual control until further notice.

This is the first time BART has been suspended due to computer malfunction. Backup generators did not help.

@nbcbayarea #BREAKING #BART power problem fixed. Trains ARE moving, but there are still system-wide delays. Power restored at 10:18 a.m.

Some other interesting developments at that link. SF muni has shut down the cable car lines due to "inclement weather" and the muni metro tunnel is closed due to flooding at church st. station.

@SFBART At 9:18am BART experienced a power failure which impacted its computers & back up generators. Power was restored at 10:18am

If the 3rd rail goes down on the whole BART system, this would be due to a problem with PG&E. I know this because I used to work at BART.

This would also explain why SF muni shut down the cable cars and the muni metro tunnel.
