You need to get your head right op. You just had a very positive thing happen and you've found a way to make it a negative. This promotion will lead to better and greater things if you don't fuck it up.

Be honest with them. Tell them you were expecting to be canned and had actually come to terms with the fact that you were going to be. When you say that you've been contemplating leaving after this... maybe they'll give you at least a payrise?

I got a surprise meeting notice from my boss and his boss a couple of weeks ago. They started out by telling me that my position had been eliminated but that I was being offered an opportunity to stay on, doing almost exactly the same work for a considerable pay cut. Having no other options, I had to accept.

I can see why you feel the way you do. If I had walked, they would've been screwed.

I had a similar experience a few years back. People were being reviewed and I was told by one of the managers to start lacking because I would be fired in my review. I was perplexed by this because I was busting my ass for the place, working overtime and saturdays, and I'm salaried so it was free time for them.

my job requires me to design all of their new product, prepare the engineering pack of prints, code all of the parts for the cnc machines and oversee the production, working with the manufacturing center to streamline production.. I'm the only one in the company doing this.

but the manager continued to remind me that my days were numbered and I should prepare to find new work.

I went into the review expecting to be handed a pink slip and was quite pissed by this fact. I went in fully prepared to unleash hell on them. But instead I was lavished with praises. They gave me a descent sized raise and threw in a bonus, fully recognizing all of my hard work. Talk about shell shocked.

when I left the review, that asshole manager asked me if I was still an employee. I told him the truth. A few months later he quit.
