We are raising a nation of youth to grow up "when they're ready."
Recently I had my second child who is a boy and a bit more of a challenge then my daughter. They are 7 yrs. apart.

I have my son in a school that uses all of the new age thinking ways of how to deal with children. So currently I am trying to potty train as my son is 3 1/2 and I feel this should have already been accomplished.

I asked his teacher how they deal with this sort of thing and was told that the new way is "when they are ready, they will." I became concerned that my son wasn't moving on in his curriculum because he was not potty trained. Before at 3 yrs of age kids were potty trained and then moved into the potty trained class room with a higher curriculum where the teachers did not change diapers.

I was told that starting Dec. they would have a special class for kids who were older but not out of diapers. Ok so fast forward to Dec. and my son is in fact in this new class with all the children from his old class who are all not potty trained.

I said f it, I'm gonna potty train him. I spent a weekend with my son on this and he has learned this phrase " I'm not ready". he told me this all weekend. I was very upset. The school has taught him this phrase.

The children of yesteryear did not say these things because parents were tired of washing diapers, paying for a service or paying for these very expensive diapers. They did not have a choice. Kids were working on it as soon as they could walk.

At a birthday party this weekend with most of the kids from his class and their parents this topic was brought up. Mostly because all of our children are still in diapers and the school head was there with her son. All but one of the parents were simply repeating this phrase "when they're ready".
Most of the parents were older, late 30's early 40's, I am only 29. So I am automatically less respected as I am looked at as too young to know what I'm doing.

My point is that with something as simple as potty training they are 3 years of age being taught that when they are ready is when they will do something. What will they not be ready for next? Why have we given the children the ok to tell us what they will and won't do?

One father made it clear that we are raising weak children with this philosophy. He was the only other parent on my side with this issue.

Needless to say I am still working on potty training and it is much more difficult because at school he is not made to do it.

And so? Whats the problem with that ideology? If it weren't ingrained into society that parents/conventions decide when kids are to "grow up", there would be no issue. You'd be suprised at how things develop if you just set them free.

the problem is with the parents not knowing how to teach there children without abusing them.

Why is your son in school so young? I have never heard of kids in school at such a young age. We maybe went to "pre-school" when I was little in the sixties but I don't think it was any formal thing that happened every day.

Doesn't kindergarten start at age 5?

Wouldn't it be easier to potty train your son if he were home with you?

Just asking, just questions. I never had kids myself.

I see what you are saying here, however if you never put this idea of "i can't" into their minds they would not know it. My son can, he just doesn't want to. He is ready and not because I just say so. It is just easier to piss in your diaper then learn something new. But now it's not just "I can't" but "I'm not ready". Which practically makes it impossible because even though he knows he can because he has, he believes he's not ready.

I think the phrase "What am I doing wrong?" is better.

Great questions... I would love to explain. My husband and I worked when my son was newborn. After my allowed two months off with him he had to go into care. At that time it was just that, daycare. After about a year of age the kids start a curriculum at this school/ daycare. It's early learning. When he was two I stopped working and he enjoyed going. I gave him the option of staying home but he liked getting to go play with his friends on the playground. He is not full time. He goes three days a week.

I'm very sorry that you're not able to raise your child yourself and potty train him as you would like to. Is this a financial issue, that you have to work?

No as I stated before he really enjoys going there. He is not full time. I knew I would get the "why doesn't he stay home with you" questions.

It is a valid point, I would not have this issue if I just kept him home. However he is learning a lot and like I said enjoys the place. He is home with me four full days a week and thinks of school as a place to play. He doesn't understand that he is getting an education being there. It would also cost me a lot less money then to send him. Tuition is 200.00$ a week.

So.. you're paying someone else to undermind your authority? You could teach your child the same things at home that he's being taught (counting, basic math, colors, computer skills, phonics, reading) and at the same time bond with him, and MAKE him stop crappin his pants.

I don't know about any others on here, but my parents used the phrase "when We're ready You will" as opposed to allowing me to say "when I'm ready, I will" and I did the same with mine.

Can do what you like, but you cannot be wishy washy on the subject...either let the daycare dictate your child's behaviors, or you do it.

Good luck
