The small tornado hit Hobsonville and Whenuapai, western suburbs of Auckland, during a midday storm that also uprooted trees, damaged buildings and caused flooding that closed roads. Authorities said that as well as those who died, seven people suffering a range of injuries were admitted to hospitals. The tornado was the deadliest in New Zealand in more than 60 years. Although the country reports about seven tornados on average each year, most are small, mild and do little damage. New Zealand’s temperate maritime climate means it isn’t prone to the large, destructive tornados that plague places like the American Midwest. Auckland Council spokesman Glyn Walters said the storm made about 150 homes uninhabitable. He said some of those homes had roofs torn off or were severely damaged while others had more minor damage or had lost power. He said 250 residents were taken to an air force base at Whenuapai, where council staff and welfare workers were assisting them. The worst weather appeared to have passed by midafternoon, Walters said. “It’s clearing up slightly but people need to be careful out there,†he said. [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 29194204 Portugal 12/06/2012 05:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Freak tornado kills 3 in Auckland, New Zealand Posted on December 6, 2012 December 6, 2012 AUCKLAND A freak tornado hit Auckland Thursday killing three people and causing utter devastation as wild weather ripped apart homes and caused flash flooding in New Zealands largest city. The storm, packing gusts of more than 110 kilometers (70 miles) per hour, struck suburban Hobsonville in the afternoon, toppling trees, ripping roofs from houses and sending debris flying. Civil Defense said three people died and seven were hospitalized, with two of the fatalities believed to have been caused by a concrete slab that landed on the cabin of a truck and the other by a falling tree. About 150 homes were badly damaged, many rendered uninhabitable, forcing residents into temporary accommodation at a nearby air force base. Resident Suzanne McFadden said the storm roared through in five minutes of utter devastation. Police urged people to stay indoors as flash floods blocked roads and falling trees brought down power lines, blacking out about 1,300 homes. The Met service weather agency said the tornado was created by a series of intense thunderstorms that lashed the city through the day, largely dissipating by early evening, although there were fears the winds could pick up overnight. Prime Minister John Key expressed condolences to the families of the dead and praised the efforts of emergency services, who swiftly sealed off an area of about one square kilometre (0.4 square miles) that was worst affected by the tornado. -TN [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] |

Every minute there were dozens of lightning flashes with relentless hail, rain and thunder, not to mention incredible gale-force winds! Then, all of a sudden, the most blinding lightning, accompanied by the loudest and longest thunder rumble I've ever heard, soon accompanied by a 'Lockdown Siren'! Somehow the staff may've found out that there's a tornado warning, and for a couple of minutes, we were in a lockdown! I've typed 2 much 1998kwl há 2 horas |
