Dec. 6, Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and Children, is the anniversary of the horrifying mass murder of 14 female engineering students at Montreal’s l’Ecole Polytechnique. It’s also a call to action to fight the scourge of violence against women and girls, including sexual violence.

Statistics Canada reports that one in two Canadian women will experience at least one incident of physical or sexual violence in her lifetime.

This fall, it seemed like every corner of Toronto was reeling from reports of sexual attacks on women: 12 assaults around Kensington Market and Christie Pits park; two in an Avenue and Lawrence home; a 16-year-old girl attacked outside Broadview and Danforth subway station; and older women assaulted at home. All told, there were more than a thousand reported sexual attacks in the city this year, and the reality is that only an estimated 10 per cent of all sexual attacks are reported to police.

There were responses from police, officials and organizations across the city. But in one neighbourhood, the Christie and Bloor area, a remarkable thing happened. Amid a climate of fear and questioning, community members came together and took collective action for safety and to end the violence. “Stop Rape Now” posters went up and rallies attended by hundreds of residents were held. Likely due to this grassroots mobilization, at least in part, newscasts reported the matter on a regular basis and a map pinpointing the location of each assault was published in this very newspaper.

To be sure, there were valid concerns about what was and wasn’t done. Residents wanted to know more details about the nature of the attacks. Police were concerned that a command post set up in the area would send the attacker underground. But this example of community action is an inspiring one for our city. At the very least, it sent a clear message: We will be vigilant and we will take back our neighbourhood.

It also stands in contrast to the typical personal safety tips women and girls are admonished to follow to “protect themselves from rape” after a public sexual assault happens. The problem is that tips too often become a source of blame and too often unfairly place the onus to stop attacks on those who are victimized.

Marc Lépine (né Gamil Rodrigue Liass Gharbi) (October 26, 1964 – December 6, 1989) was a 25-year-old from Montreal, Canada who murdered fourteen women and wounded ten women and four men[1] at the École Polytechnique, an engineering school affiliated with the Université de Montréal, in the "École Polytechnique massacre", also known as the "Montreal Massacre"

Lépine was born in Montreal, the son of a Canadian nurse and an Algerian businessman. His father was abusive and contemptuous of women. After his parents separated when he was seven, his mother returned to nursing to support her children. Lépine and his younger sister lived with other families, seeing their mother on weekends. Lépine was considered bright but withdrawn and having difficulties with peer and family relationships. He changed his name to Marc Lépine at the age of 14 giving as the reason his hatred of his father. Lépine's application to the Canadian Forces was rejected, and in 1982 he began a science program at a college, switching to a more technical program after one year. In 1986, he dropped out of the course in his final term, and was subsequently fired from his job at a hospital due to his poor attitude. He began a computer programming course in 1988, and again abandoned it before completion. Lépine twice applied for admission to the École Polytechnique, but lacked two required compulsory courses.

After several months of planning, Lépine entered the École Polytechnique de Montréal, on the afternoon of December 6, 1989. He had long complained about women working in non-traditional jobs, and after separating men and women in a classroom, he shot the women, claiming that he was fighting feminism. He then moved into other parts of the building, targeting women as he went, before killing himself. His suicide note blamed feminists for ruining his life.....

Today we remember 14 young women killed a single act of gender-based violence in Montreal thirty three years ago. We continue to mark this day in Canada because violence against women continues. In 2010 women accounted for 75% of victims of spousal homicide and 78% of dating violence. For women, revealing your gender in online gaming continues to remain an invitation for sexual harassment.

Men outnumber women 2-to-1 in speaking roles in film. Hollywood continues to stereotype roles for women (most frequently as mothers or as partners to leading male characters) and sexualize their characters (referenced to by other characters based upon their appearance).

Further, gender stereotypes translate into economic disempowerment. The Conference Board reported that women employed in management occupations earned 86 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts in Canada. In sales and service occupations, the gap was even larger, at 72 cents for every dollar. "Between 1987 and 2009, the proportion of women in senior management has changed little—men are still more than twice as likely to hold a senior executive position."

Violence and abuse ultimately reflect our underlying beliefs acted to their extreme. In most cultures today the gender stereotype for women remains stubbornly a submissive one. We must challenge that attitude.

On December 6th, 1989, fourteen women were singled out and murdered because they were women. Over half of the women in Canada report having been sexually or physically assaulted since the age of 16. There are many men that are teaching their boys and other men about respect for women, equality, and humanity, that it doesn't always have to be the women that say "this has to stop". I'm hoping that something will change, and it is going to take all of us, men and women, to make it happen.

Marc Lépine was an asshole and a nutbar who thankfully blew his own head off. What happened was a tragedy, but it was wholly due to him and his personal insanity.

What happened was tragic but if it were a feminist killing male students who had no hatred of women in any way (like how the women killed probably were not feminists), would it get national attention or even news coverage?

it just goes to show that there is something wrong with sexuality in this system.

Don't just call him a mysoginist, there's clearly a reason why this is happening and has pretty much always happened (ie, the bitterness of men over women) ever since the fall of mankind.

But we don't ever see that, do we?
Men are the ones who explode, an kill others.
Women tend to implode and kill themselves.

Marc Lepine very explicitly separated the women from the men, and targeted them because they were women.

This happened in our culture, because our culture does not honour and respect women.

he clearly targeted women and separated them from the men before he killed them. ergo, he hated them.
our culture must hate women also.
on a deep subconscious level, a lot of men blame women for their own lack of self-worth,or feelings of powerlessness.
women do the same, probably.
but women don't go around committing mass murders, to the same regard as men do.

Marc Lepine never had a girlfriend and probably used the feminist schnick as an excuse.

And I don't see how our culture doesn't respect women. It's a hell of a lot better than Afghanistan or Iraq.

if we respected women, truly, women would not ever fear rape, or being beaten.etc.
