John Lennon said that he was ''Bigger than Jesus''' ... turns out he wasn't.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25075141

You, like many before you, have misunderstood that statement. It was not intended to be a boastful statement.
 Quoting: oh_yikes

Exactly. He meant their popularity was overwhelming. And not necessarily in a good way rather in a WTF did we get ourselves into way. No one knew the scale of blissful insanity they were going to cause.

Lennon was quite humble in fact. Another fact is; the newspaper/media (government) LOVES to spin stories to suit an agenda (and for shock value). The government wanted to deport Lennon for his stance on peace which was against war (Vietnam) and Nixon didn't want people to want that. So they try to get him on pot possession instead. Yup, marijuana which, is slowly becoming legal. Go figger!

High profile people who are advocates for peace, tend to get killed.

Overall people took Elvis's death much harder than lennons.

Murder is always more shocking than some self inflicted death. Not saying it's any easier to cope with but being SHOT is far worse than dying from something that could've should've been prevented, ya know?

It's been stated that there are seven events (for those who are old enough) who will know EXACTLY where they were when we heard the news.

1) JFK murder 1964
2) Apollo 11 Moon landing 1969
3) Lennon's murder 1980
4) Space Shuttle Challenger disaster 1984
5) OJ Simpson verdict 1994
6) Princess Diana murder 1997
7) 9-11 inside job 2001

I've included Jerry Garcia's death 1995.... but that's just me redface
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29150242

first 3 events: school
last 4 events: on the job

don't remember lennons murder, maybe I was lost in space that year.

Some people give credence to so many insignificant celebrities who talk the talk, but don't walk the walk...

John Lennon's advice was pretty insignificant to most people back then, much like Clint Eastwood talking to an empty chair(Obama)

Was on our school bus. The driver had the radio on (was the next morning) and she pulled the bus over because she was visibly upset. We could see she was crying. She announced to us that a great man and musical icon had been killed. I knew who he was but others on the bus didn't. I was 14.

way true, the media practically ignored his killing. said as little about it as possible. didn't want too much attention given to a revolutionary, a fee thinker and someone who actually was speaking out

I was 11 years old attending a 4-H sponsored gun safety class in rural America. It was 13 days until my 12th birthday. I was born at precisely 11:11 on 12/21/69...
