The American military is involved in Afghanistan in protecting the secular Government from Religous extremists. This is a very progressive thing for the US military. Upholding the rights of women - I can think of many Communists who would share in the aims of the US military in bringing secularism and enlightenment to Afghanistan.

Communists are very good at People power revolutions and these seem to be very popular in the US right now. Perhaps they can bring some useful skills to the American military.

During the cold war the US military had a policy of rejecting Communists from serving in the armed forces for obvious reasons.

The american military also banned homosexuals.

Has this policy shifted in the light of the cold war being over for over 20 years and Americas new enemies are religious extremists.

Yes you can and they aren't going to ask that information because they already have it. They ask you certain questions while joining and the answer to almost all of them is either yes or no, usually no.

I'm just interested in what the current thinking is in the US towards recruitment of socialists and communists into the ranks of the US military.

America is helping Vietnam right now. Ostensibly a communist country in an attempt to contain China. Including trade deals like the trans pacific partnership.
