Message Subject I can tell you why so many people despise "preppers"

Because so-called "preppers" despise everyone else and look forward to the day they can get away with a shootout over a can of beans. The attitude of the preppers is what gets them disliked: they are psychos in the making, many who look forward to the time they can get away with being a serial killer. They look down upon others as scum to kill when the time is right, instead of looking at the world with compassion. They care for no one. And they tend to keep repeating the mantra, "It's happening soon," all with a wry smile on their face, showing how much they look forward to the destruction of the world, and if people say "no it isn't," they act so stuck up about being "awake" that no one can get through to them.

They are as low as they come.

No offense but this is how preppers come across on GLP at any rate. I've never met a proper one face to face. In fact there are very few preppers in Europe, it seems to mainly be a phenomenon of the USA. I'm sure there are loads of preppers who don't come across as gun crazed selfish douches it's just that these preppers don't visit GLP.

As I have said in this thread, this is a discussion as to why people don't like preppers, and so it has to deal with generalities and appearances. What is being described (and shown in responses on here) is exactly what people don't like.

I think no one has a problem with the boy scout motto of "be prepared." That, however, is only a small aspect of what it takes to be a prepper. Many people are prepared for accidents, but the prepper expects the accident, looks for it, sees it as a thing of good. That is the problem (again, the general appearance is being discussed).

And yes, it is an American thing. There are many factors involved in the creation of preppers, from the cold war and survivalists (fall out shelters, etc), to the rugged individualism and militia ideology...

Well, USA is allot wilder than Europe. In UK you are rarely more than 10-20 miles away from civilization. We have virtually no dangerous animals.

I've heard USA can be quite surprisingly dangerous. Chiggers burrowing into skin if you lie down on someones lawn, Poison ivy plants and bears spring to mind. In the UK I once got stung by a bee. Just doesn't compare does it.

I would suggest that another factor is religion. Now I do not mean that preppers are religiotards, I'm refering more to the effect of religion on the collective socio-media-subconscious. Effectively that widely held beliefs will in some fashion effect the beliefs of even those who don't follow a certain faith.
