That's exactly what I was thinking :)))) it's just that I don't want do her to return it to me I would feel like crap

I remember when I was in school. We gave our teachers gifts. That kinda stopped by junior high.

With that I think it's a good idea. She will need that gift card sooner or later.

If you think it might be inapropriate try to hand it off in private, if you can.

Of course in private , I wanted to give it along a nice Christmas card and some chocolate

That's very thoughtful. Good on you. If it was me I'd put the giftcard in thru Christmas card and seal it. Recipient can open it in private.

I would advise you do it anonymously. That way, if the school board, does have a problem with it, they can't figure out who it was, also, it gives Teacher a chance to view every kid in the class as the child of someone very kind and generous. Just think, one anonymous gift can do lots of good for many people, Teacher gets what she needs right now and continues to give the same to every child in her class!

I think I would include a note saying something like,
you hope this will help her family in their recovery from Sandy. I would in some way make it clear that it is a "Hurricane SAndy" related gift and a personal gesture
of goodwill.

Or be like I know how you could earn a quick c-note.

Totally appropriate, imho. You can even enclose a
note saying how you know about their loss and are
trying to help in a way you can.

I cannot imagine anyone, under these extraordinary
circumstances, feeling it was anything but a kind
and generous gesture of care.
