How long can a jet remain stationary?
Coming home 6:30 pm tonight, I see a huge light in the sky
straight east of me. I am an hour west of Toronto so I do see alot of planes taxi-ing to land at Pearson. But this huge light remained stationary the whole time i was driving home which is a 15 minute drive??? Anyone else see it?

Re: How long can a jet remain stationary?
A US marine Jet developed by a British company that can turn its jets down and hover it is one of the only jets that can take off vertically. They are fucking amazing and can hover in one spot for long periods of time. You may have seen them test a new version. Up in Dayton Ohio next to Wright Patt they initially tested them when they were still a prototype and three or four Dayton Police officers chased it across the city thinking it was an Alien space craft. Three years later it was debuted and the cops felt fucking stupid.

They may have been testing it out to buy it. You never know really. I knew at first it was the UK and the US that had them and then I think Australia bought some.

They are by far one of the coolest Jets possible. One was even used in MGS 2 as a boss mission which was fucking beautiful.

Under the right conditions, as long as it has fuel.

Hmm Aussie, thanks for checking in. So you think it could have been a regular jet?

Longer than it can stay flying.

They can hover for about Ten to Fifteen Minutes depending how cool it is outside.
Also they take off like bats out of Hell from the hover position.

If it had a head wind speed above its stall speed and equal to its air speed it would remain stationary relative to the ground.

This would be around 200 mph for a guess, so unlikely at low altitudes, but possible none the less. IMO.

Cheers,

Cool info Aussie. Thanks.

The temperature here is sort of mild. It would have been around 5 celcius or so this evening. In fahrenheit i would say thats around 45

Re: How long can a jet remain stationary?
The way they work is they use coolant to keep their jets from over heating, also the outside temperature effects it greatly.
If it hadn't used very much coolant and they were testing it to see how long it could last in 45 degree weather 15 shouldn't be much of a stretch seeing as 80 degree weather they can hover longer then ten minutes.
If they were testing it to buy it it would explain why they let it hover for 10 to fifteen minutes.
That is the most rational thing I can think of without saying aliens. However I do remember something about a new version from the same company that was designed smaller and holding less fire power so it could have speed and stability along with longer hover times. I saw one at Wright Patt a few years ago as a prototype but I'm not sure if it has been complete. I was told they were having issues holding enough fuel for it to be practical, but they could have solved it.

It is pretty cool. I think it was based off of an old experimental Twin Engine plane that was designed to be able to take off at harsh angles by tilting their engine. It wasn't very practical at the time because engines at the time were still pretty primitive compared to even engines in ATVs now.
An even cooler jet is the Warthog. It is a jet built around a giant 50 mm Gatling cannon that can fire its entire payload in 10 seconds.

He said it wasn't windy and that it took off fast from hover. Any small plane can hover if there is wind, for example a Cessna 152 only needs about 60 mph of wind to stay stationary, and another example are gliders they can catch up drafts that can make them seem like they are hovering.
But the only jet that I know of apart from prototypes that can hover and then take off hauling ass is a Harrier.

It could have been but I doubt it seeing as the only countries to test it are US and UK until its finished.
They don't wanna risk even other allies to have one until its finished.
But they could have been testing it in low weather.
What is the Altitude where you are at? That might give more reason to test the F-35 L II.

A 152 has a stall speed of about 40 mph with full flaps, about half of that with vortex generators.
