Copahue Volcano just erupted...

OP, do you have any pictures of your mountain village, it sounds pretty.

what will happen, is the 'sheet' as you so well put it, will indeed hit the fan, spawning either a huge ash/gas cloud, or a mega tsunami, or perhaps both, and as you said, the people on the other side of the planet will have PLENTY of time to come to terms with their impending death.

it is a NIGHTMARE scenario that tbh scares the crap out of me. Can you imagine it? having to tell your kids, your family, that they're about to die, within the next hours/days/weeks?

it doesn't bear thinking about. I'd rather the whole earth just went POP, like a balloon. no time to think about anything. here one minute, gone the next, but that isn't how it will be.

Nothing to worrie about.....mother earth is just having growing pains, and farting & burping a bit

it's the projectile vomit and diarrhoea that concerns me

Copahue volcano erupts along Chile-Argentine border, alert level raised

December 22, 2012 – CHILE - Increased activity at a volcano on the border of Chile and Argentina has authorities in both countries on alert. The Copahue volcano in Argentina’s Neuquen province and Chile’s Biobio region began spewing ash and gas early on Saturday, but officials say it’s still in an early eruption stage. Chile’s Mining Minister Hernan de Solminihac says the volcano’s smoke plume led Argentine emergency officials to issue a yellow alert and constantly monitor its activity in case of a full eruption. Flights expected to pass by the area around the volcano have been warned. Officials say there’s no need yet to evacuate people near the volcano, which is part of the Andes mountain chain. Lol.. maybe the Americans can donate fast food to the hungry Volcanoes then? or.. give the Volcano some Bicarb of Soda to settle the 'ole stomach. Send Han Solo to deliver it in his Falcon, I mean.. he's done it before in Star Wars.

Scary tho'.. not cos of the big bang it makes.. but too much dust in the upper atmosphere isn't good for any life on Earth.

yeah but.. the volcanoes are outside the EU, with their lava flow of gold in EU safety deposit boxes, avoiding paying Tax!

I used to live in Mt Shasta, but it's been quiet this last few hundred years or so.

One more quick update – I grabbed the brand new Terra/MODIS imagery for South America and the plume from the Copahue was glorious – stretching over 350 km across Argentina to the east of the volcano. For a sense of scale on the image, the distance between Copahue and the Embalse los Barreales is ~225 km. The plume itself has been reported to be over 9.5 km / 30,000 feet tall.
