Instead of being all sneaky about it and trying to get advice from people on the internet, why don't you TALK to him? He can't read your mind, tell him how you feel, and make sure he's paying attention. We tend to drift away when we feel as if we're approached in a negative tone, at least I've caught myself doing the same thing.
