I use a gold plated knife that came with a bottle of justin bieber cologne. It hasn't failed me yet.

I have a Smith & Wesson Border Guard folder that is extremely good quality. Has the best locking system I have experienced with any folder and stays extremely sharp for how much I use it. If you REALLY want a SURVIVAL knife, get a fixed blade.. Folders are handy, but when you are in a situation where you have to beat the crap out of your knife, you will most likely break your folding. Check out Cold Steel, S&W, Gerber.. (GO TO THE BLADEOPS website)

if you have the cash, try an ESEE blade of any type. Amazing quality. I have an ESEE Izula II fixed blade -- it has a lifetime use or abuse warranty, and believe me it takes a lot of abuse. ESEE used to be Ontario/Rat Cutlery.

CRKT M16-13T - Spear Point - Designed by Kit Carson

[link to www.crkt.com]

This is a titanium knife so it will last forever and I think CRKT gives a lifetime warranty on it. It has the Carson Flipper which allows you to open it with one finger pull. It also has a lock to prevent it from closing on you.

I love mine.

I've got a CRKT M16-10KZ with a Tanto style blade that I carry every day and absolutely love it.

[link to www.crkt.com]

It has a locking mechanism where you have to move a button on top of the blade back before you can close it that makes it impossible to fold over accidentally under pressure. It balances out in the hand like it belongs there and has an inertia opening system that flips open with one finger as easily as a switchblade.

I bought a Gerber copy of it and it's the worst knife I've ever had.

For a fixed blade I've got an Italian made Extrema Ratio 58 HRC with an 11 5/8" Tanto style blade.

Kershaw blackout w/o assisted open. This is a semi-tanto style knife. I have used mine almost everyday for the past ten years.

I only have a S&W folder, and that's what the OP was looking for. I have one of the Gerber, Bear Grylls, fixed blades. That thing is WICKED!!! I have beat the crap out of that thing and it still goes hard! The only thing I don't like about gerber knives, they don't stay sharp for very long. But they are pretty strong!

Get a fixed OP with full tang. Much more usefulness and more sturdy, there are harnesses that make the knife invisible so you don't have to worry about some sheep freaking out. Also try and look for one with a cross-guard if you can, how much money are you willing to spend?

What are the benefits/drawbacks to the tanto blade style? It is for general survival situations. Want a folder not fixed blade. Suggestions please.

That is your first mistake. Go with a fixed blade for survival situations. A good military knife is the best choice.
Each blade type has some drawbacks.
Look for good strong handle with a full tang. the others will break with long term ruff use.

The Mora 711 gets rave reviews and is very inexpensive. It isn't a folder though for the price I think I will pick one up. Any thoughts on the Mora 711?

Some very good suggestions and insights everyone. Thanks! Seems like I should go with 2 knives. A fixed AND a folder. I'm leaning towards the Mora 711 for fixed and the Spyderco Endura for the folder. Any reason why I shouldn't go this route?

As for fixed blade, I prefer KA-BAR USMC.

^^^^
If you want to get real this is your answer. or an old buck
fixed blade stainless. Ive owned hundreds of knives and used them in the field for serious work. I have bags and bags of broken knives and worn out ones. I was always rough on them and pushed their use, the above mentioned survived. fewest parts is best.

Re: Looking for a good knife. Recommendations?
Op, I own countless mora's and love them all.

The newly redesigned clipper has a MUCH better sheath than the 711 and I use it more in the field. The 711 gets more utility use around the house.

Both are great cutters, both are extremely useful. The new clipper has a much longer tang, but to be honest, I can't break the supposedly weak tanged 711. Best value in any product I've found in a long time.....they just work.

Did you ignore my first post??

If so again.....

I've got a S&W H.R.T. AM-60B with a Magnesium handle too. It's a little bigger than my CRKT M16-10K so I don't carry it much for fear of getting arrested, but it's a heavier knife and strictly business.

The mora 711 is excellent, I have used and trashed on a few of these and they are very good.

Considering how cheap these are they are excellent. A mora 711 plus kershaw blackout is a great combination.

SOG Trident.

Remove the safety so it does not interfere when you need it in a hurry.
