QUESTION--Why Arn't There Any Big Quakes or Disasters in Canada?

there are big earthquakes on the west coast.
most of eastern canada is the canadaian shielf, which is a very old, very stable land formation.

there'll be some disastrous oil spills on the BC coast if the Enbridge pipeline gets built.

Don't worry. There will be and most you don't hear about because they are in isolated area's. There were 8 total in the last 4 mnths 6.0 and up. Hudsons Bay.

There were 12 in the NWT over 6.0 last 4 mnths.

There were 6 in Inavut and one in Inuvik that was a 6.0 and up. last 4mnths.

There were a few along the St Lawrence seaway. 5.0 and up.

There were a few in Quebec.

There was one in Southern Alberta that was a 5.3 about a mnth ago.

In around the Great Lakes and the St Lawerence seaway are many faults that are directly tied into the New Madrid. If the new Madrid ever goes off the Great Lakes will empty into the Eastern United States. Quebec and Ontario would suffer alot of damage.

There have also been several in the Maritimes this year. One a week ago that was a 4.8 in PEI.

There is a Canada Earthquake site and they do put them up on RSOE EDIS also.

Yes the Dark gods will get Canada Too. West Coast is toast all the way up to the Fraser Valley. There goes China Hong Couver.

Then Quebec french fried and swished down the Mississippi with the rest of the Eastern Bums and Scums. Ottawa has Earthquakes all the time also.

Alberta. Saskatchewan and Manitoba will be left standing until all the water comes in from the North During the Pole Shift.

Maritimes will go down along the East Coast during all the tsunami's. Actually there won't be much left of North America. Just bits and chunks here and there.

Hudson's Bay was one impact when the earth was a snowball, the ice held the crust together. If the rock was deep space cold when the moon hit it would be like hitting bulletproof glass as far any real lasting damage and any iron would have stayed with the earth.

I assume the Rockies are still an effective water barrier to the Pacific Tides?

Canada is sparsely populated with a very large landmass.

Statistically, the chances of something "big" happening in a major city is rather low as there are not very many to begin with.

There are only 4 population centeres of over 1 million, approximately 10 with populations of about 1/2 million.

To compare, the United States, with less land mass has 9 cities of over 1 million and approximately 35 cities with populations of about 1/2 million.

China has over 160 cities of over a million.

Canada is a vast, essentially empty land. This is nothing to be ashamed of, simply a fact.

That's only a disaster if you aren't or if you're trying to flag down a freighter.

Other than the one that created the Rockies some 240MYA and has slowly moved west till it is just off the coast of BC now. That means Vancouver Island is going to rollover like a block of ice in open water as it meets the mainland.

You are both right. It is true that the Canadian population is focused in population centers just north of the US boarder and that large expanses are empty. There is statistically as much chance of a disaster affecting an individual as in any other populated area. At the same time when earthquakes, really wild weather and forest fires happen over much of the landmass, the number of people affected is potentially very low.

We could invite all the people on the island of Japan to settle around around Hudson's Bay and 'the North' would still be empty. Thing is what do you do with all that fresh water that is sitting there, with that thin layer of moss the stuff just won't evaporate. Mind you it is hard as rock in the winter so seeding and harvest would best be done at that time and let the summer months be just for growing. Save some food for the fish stocks in the Bay.

Here is that snowball earth vid. If one object came in at that time it would punch a nice round hole and heavy magma would have covered it without splashing over the edge onto the ice. Size and direction can be determined by reversing the spreading that resulted the islands north of there including Greenland. The heat would have been the place that the ice started to turn the ice world into a watery one helping to shape the top layer that we call the Shield. That was some billions of years ago. The Rockies would have been a crack and uplifting from the pressure wave in the magma by initial impact and extra weight of the outflows.



Today the Pacific Rift has magma flowing eastward and it would be under the Bay that the down-draft would be happening as that would be the place the westward moving flow would meet that is from the Atlantic Rift, the suction that has on the 'crust' so that it causes a slight depression in the land.

The reason is because we have been lucky and that our location does not particularly lend itself to natural disasters.

However, there have been smaller scale disasters in recent times, including tornadoes that took lives, hurricanes that took lives and storms that took lives.

Earthquake in BC is probably the highest threat.

There have been major incidents in Canada, incidents which could easily happen again. There is a half mile diameter, perfectly round lake not far from me. It is a meteorite hole. To any humans who might have experienced it, it was a disaster, but they do not know it because they are dead, killed instantly by the blast wave.

the Cascadia fault is a doozy.

base commander at Borden at the time got fired, because he dispatched troops without permission from Ottawa first.

He was a General as well ( Now mostly Colonels command bases)
