Sawdust in a manual transmission?
Do you remember the old saying of doing this?
I'm assuming it had to be manual transmissions, would totally bugger up an automatic.
the reason I ask is I bought an old 4X4 Nissan. Loud roar when you get over 40mph.
I finally found the problem. The pinion gear in the rear axle is extremely worn. Ring gear too of course. The pinion is worn down to flattened faces of each tooth.
I've been searching for an axle. Thought i found one in Arkansas. Just talked to the man, he says apparently they have crushed and scrapped out the pickup his computer said was still in the yard.
Still looking. The one that's gone would have been $400 and 8 hours round trip to go and pick up.
I'm wondering if sawdust might quiet the rear end down and just drive the raskle till it dies.
Sweet little truck. I foolishly gave too much at $1250 for it. I was hoping the gearboxes were just out of oil.
Already replaced one front drive axle, $90. Ordered one for the other side......
4 cylinder. Could get 30-40 miles per gallon.
Am I throwing good money after bad? Park it and learn my lesson?
Or any possibility sawdust would quiet the rear axle to bearable levels?
Everything is in good condition. Motor is a transplant.
About 250,000 miles on the truck.

Sawdust was an old trick to quiet the tranny long
enough to get it sold, once it is all crushed there
is no lubrication, tranny strips out,BUT,the car is sold.
Repair tranny, part it out or junk it.

If it happened to Barney Fife in Mayberry it could happen anywhere.

yes, this.. it is done as a trick/scam NOT a real long lasting fix. someone i know got burned by paying for a "repair" form someone who did this then skipped town

Re: Sawdust in a manual transmission?
Just put it in four wheel drive and then disconnect the rear driveshaft. This will take the engine torque pressure off the rear pinion, some what. Should buy some time on saving rear end until you find parts.

Had an old truck we used for logging.Similar issue. Drained the gear oil, replaced it with grease. Much better.

DO NOT put sawdust in if you are looking to keep it for any time.

Did you run the truck on the street?

I would maybe grease it for around the landing but wouldn't drive it even 40 for very far.

It would be cheaper than getting another questionable used axle to get a new ring and pinion and install them.

Even worse case with the set up you will be better off than you are now and there are lots of websites to help you get the parts installed and shimmed.

I never saw one of those get better mileage than 22 on the highway though and they usually got around 18 to 20 which was worse than my F-150 straight 6s got.

The Mazda and Nissan 4s never gave the fuel millage of the Toyota 4s but the Nissans were built heavier

Re: Sawdust in a manual transmission?
Thanks for all the replies.
The man who said his trucks were crushed gave me a number of a yard in Kansas who the computer said had one.
He has 2......
Was kind enough to pull one for me yesterday, ahead of other parts on his list.
He checked the gears, said they look real good. $250 and he's closr than the other yard. Cool.
I'm going there this morning. Pick up one or 2 wheels too. don't have a spare. Some miscelaneous pieces.
Spent 3 hours yesterday cleaning up the motor wiring harness and bundling/wrapping/securing. Also redid the battery cables/clamps and connections.
Whoever did the motor swap shouldn't be allowed to use pliers, or any tools.
Picking up the 2nd front drive axle, another ball joint and will go collect the rear axle this morning.
Thanks again for the replies.
No, I really didn't expect sawdust to "fix" it. Thought it might delay the gear failure. Could still use it for firewood retreival at low speed....

Looking forward to getting it up to 100% and being able to drive her and find out the mileage.
With luck I can take it in to get a new windshield installed Monday or so.
I'll end up with about $2000 and 4 days work into it.
