If the Board of Directors made the decision, why?
To not have to pay for the health care that is mandated by Obamacare.
Restricting the amount of time workers are allowed to work does not help the economy.

Preach on. A vote for Obama was not a good thing.

let's go down the rabbit hole:

1. GNC is a huge corporation
2. Obamacare is a disaster

Obamacare states that all employees are required to be covered by health insurance by the corporation except those employees working 29 hours or less, which are considered part time or seasonal.

So, the corporation is going to cut everyone hours to 29 or less to avoid paying healthcare for their employees -

now that's loyalty

and ... on top of that, some of those "part time" workers work 40 hours or more a week! Which would make them full time employees due full time employee benefits, which obviously are not being honored by calling them "part time employees"

Anyway, that's what I read from OP's sad tale and blame deflect.

It seems the only "losers" in all of this are ... once again ... wait for it .... THE PEOPLE!

One way to get around this Obamacare nightmare is to fire your employees and hire them back as sub-contractors or independent contractors. Theyd be responsible for paying their own taxes. Eliminate the employer/employee relationship.

Just like the thread about the doctors walking out of the meeting about Obamacare and the other instance of doctors charging cash and accepting no insurance, we the people must find a way around this to show our views (or save our company). Being forced into a corner makes you think outside the box.

A lot of these people will now qualify for reduced, or free, Obamacare. Perhaps other benefits as well. They go from payers, to takers... not because they want to, but because they need healthcare.

Then, the Democrats will tell them that if they don't vote for them, the Republicans will take those benefits away.

By that time, they are not even living from pay-check to pay-check -- and they can't take the chance that they would lose the benefits.

They vote Democrat...

I believe that being able to be healthy is a human right. It's impossible to live healthy in a city, on minimum wage, on 29 hours work, and once health deteriorates costs only increases specially if you're on minumum wage.
So I would forsee two outcomes: those who leave the job and those that are so miserably sick that can't come to work. GNC has to go as an online seller or out of business. No wait....the shippers "associates" also left or are sick, so anyway you look at it, out of business it is.

The real problem is America's sickcare cost. In Peru, I can walk into any hospital and with some luck get an appointment with a doctor, get my medicines and lab work coordinated in a couple of hours ($80-$300). If you need emergency treatment you get it inmediatly (surcharge $50).
That's because hospitals are not crowded at all, people are healthy and there is a semi-free($0-$25/month) government insurance plan (own hospitals, staff) that treats millions of peruvians.

The per-capita peruvian expenditure in medicines is $15 a
year!!!

Peruvian infant mortality and living expectations are exactly the same as americans!


So it' all about quality then?

You have employees that are good employees.
You have good employees that want to work.
You have good employees that want to work, pay taxes on that income
and contribute. Then you are told, NO!

Make them get another job, then maybe they can work another 29 hours.
They can work two jobs, working over 58 hrs a week, and not qualify for any benefits.

When you erode the core ability for someone to work, a multitude of problems will arise.

Because black folks think that if they bring everyone else down to their level, it makes us all equal in their eyes. They were slaves and they were poor, now it's our turn according to them. Got news for them, Things are gonna get so bad, you won't be able to get a job unless you can really read and write. The levels of education will be lowered yet again to make up for substandard schooling. and as you most of us already know, a lot of people can't even read and write basic English.

Don't blame Obamacare on your company wanting to weasel out of providing for its employees.

It is a convenient excuse of corporations. Finally being forced to actually provide a small improvement to the quality of life for some of its employees seems to be a huge issue for shady parasitic corporations who only care about profits.

No sympathy here, you have essentially raped the small business person, perhaps those people will go out and work for smaller companies that give good healthcare for their next job....oh wait, you destroyed those opportunities a while ago.

OP, the exact same phenomenon is happening in the Food Manufacturing industry throughout most of California (I'm not aware of what is happening in other states). I know many food industry/manufacturing leaders in many companies and they will do this to their employees as well.

Another thing they are doing to get around this is funneling their present employees into Temp Agencies. It's very underhanded in many ways but the companies claim that they cannot afford Obamacare and hence why they do this.

I wish the media pulled its head out and showed this as the new reality for Americans (and illegals for that matter, which they hire as well and still fudge the paperwork).

I'd do a Youtube documentary on it but I don't know if my contacts would want to go public or if I would become a target of sorts.

Damn, I should have paid attention to you.

I was a manager for several GNC stores in Florida. This will make it almost impossible to even keep employees in the store for quite awhile. I imagine managers will be forced to work 80-100 hour weeks for who knows how long. That would suck! This is set to happen to at least 30% of ALL jobs in the US. I cannot imagine the havoc that will ensue!

The manager will also pay the price. They will work over 40 hrs a week and see no overtime. They will delete any OT hrs for fear of termination. It has been done many times. There is currently a class action law suite because of this very thing, against GNC.
