I wouldn't want to use that kind of force on anyone over something like vandalism myself and probably not even any sort of theft. Just wouldn't be worth having to go through the process and deal with the aggravation.

Someone mentioned prison system slaves, this is true. They have to keep those beds full and from what I can gather, they prefer non-violent offenders to do the work. That's why every day there are more and more laws for the people to follow.

My point... it was felony possession so I don't know how much he had... but damn.

That's fine. But 8 fucking years in state prison for tagging and weed possession? That's insanely harsh. It's way out of proportion to the crimes committed. And how much marijuana did he have? In my state small amounts are decriminalized.

Amen. This kid will be fucked up for life after spending years in a state prison, at his age, for non-violent offense. He's not hardened. He will be when he gets out and still be a young man. Maybe that's the idea, they know odds are good he'll end up being in and out of prison. Fucking sick.

Here in St Louis we have a tagger who calls himself "rat fag"

over the last two years he's spray painted businesses , homes, cars and billboards

This guys not an artist , it looks like something an 8 year old would do.

But its all over the place.

When you have " Rat Fag " crudely sprayed in 6 foot tall letters across the front of your store , you have to pay someone to get rid of it.

I was talking to an insurance adjuster who's estimating that the guy has done over a half million in damages so far

So yeah, I would have no problem putting his ignorant ass in jail for a 8 years.

His sentence was reduced to two years due to a change in Texas state law that now outlaws stacking sentences.

2 years is till harsh IMO.

His final sentence of 2 years dates from 2009. This kid is out now. WTF are we arguing over it?

And btw...

If this young man had been from a fairly wealthy family, he would have been given the right to make a phone call.

He would have called a parent who, if he or she wasn't an asshole, would have told him not to say anything to the police (every non-asshole knows that). The parent would then call the family attorney who would have notified the police that the defendant was being represented by counsel.

He or she would have then contacted a criminal attorney who would have taken it from there.

The basic scenario as to what happened was that the perp was arrested on or near the scene of the crime, and then "brought upstairs" to be interrogated by a "nice guy" detective (good cop), then interrogated by a detective who would scare him to death (bad cop).

Alternately, these two police-man/woman would work together to get the perp to admit to EVERYTHING (including things that he might have made up).

The bottom line was that the police only had evidence for the initial crime. But by telling the perp that the judge would be much more lenient if he confessed to everything, he would get a lesser sentence. NO cop in this country would ever believe that!

So in the end, the "district court" (misdemeanors only)tried the defendant for the crime he was caught committing, AND ALSO for the seven crimes he confessed to BECAUSE THE POLICE SAID THE JUDGE "WOULD GO EASY ON HIM" IF HE CONFESSED TO!!!!!!!!

Much to the defendant's dismay, the judge buried him alive by finding him guilty for all the misdemeanors HE ADMITTED TO ... AND THEN sentenced him to CONSECUTIVE TERMS in the county jail!

What is even far worse is that these jails are not designed to hold prisoners for more than a year. Sentences of more than a year are served in prisons.

The basic point here is that the police and the judge showed absolutely no mercy for the defendant (which in these days is not unusual). Or if you prefer, they sentenced him to the stake (if you happen to know what that means).

As a young black kid once said to me...

"That's good old American justice."

There is still a point to be made.

These small time criminals who cannot afford a real defense will continue to get these strong sentences because the prison industry needs CHEAP LABOR!

It's not "justice," it's SLAVERY.

Yes it's still bad to graffiti buildings but 8 years and no possibility of parole is a bit much for it. While there's people get off less for abusing and killing their pets. There's others who probably done enough wrong to warrant that but yet get off for less.

He is lucky he doesn't live in Singapore.
Singapore has an UBER low crime rate.
Why?

People like Mr Graffiti Tagger get tied to a a post and CAINED for with 5 or more lashes depending on the severity of the offense.
