Americans to Eat 1.23 Billion Chicken Wings Super Bowl Weekend

Chicken wings have become a staple food of Super Bowl parties in the U.S., and demand for them on menus is now at an all-time high leading up to the second biggest eating day of the year – Super Bowl Sunday.

Super Bowl weekend is unquestionably the biggest time of the year for wings. According to the National Chicken Council’s 2013 Wing Report, more than 1.23 billion wing portions will be consumed during Super Bowl weekend in 2013, as fans watch the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens battle for the Lombardi Trophy.

To put that into perspective, if 1.23 billion wing segments were laid end to end, they would stretch from Candlestick Park in San Francisco to M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore… 27 times.

Super Bowl wing consumption is down about one percent, or 12.3 million wings, compared to last year’s numbers, but not because demand for them is declining. Quite the opposite, explains Bill Roenigk, chief economist and market analyst at the Washington, D.C.-based National Chicken Council.

One gets 4 'hot wings' per one chicken.

If these numbers are accurate then Americans will consume 300,000,000 dead chickens on a single day...

Just to put it in perspective.

This wing thing has always confused me:) So much work for such a small bite of food. I used to use them for stock only. The latest craze I guess.

I make an entire chicken breast hot wing style. Then I slice it up and serve over a bed of lettuce with celery, avacado and blue cheese dressing. It's delicious.

Super Bowl Numbers - Staggering!
Here are some of the numbers involved:

Super Bowl Tickets Prices - Average Ticket Price = $3400. Tickets are selling for the low low price of $1600 each to $325,000 for a 30 person suite.

Beyonce's Paycheck for Superbowl = $0.00 (but all other extras needed for the half-time performance is paid for - i.e., performers RB, equipment, lighting, etc...)

The average cost for a 30-second Super Bowl ad in 2013 is roughly $3.8 million dollars.

Last year, an estimated $1 billion+ was spent on food. $184 million on potato chips, $40 million on pretzels and – for the health conscious – $12 million on rice cakes (rice cakes, really?). See more food coverage below.

Aside from worldwide fame, a big ring and the famous Lombardi trophy, Super Bowl winners also receive $83,000!

Oh, and 7-Eleven claims a whopping 20 percent in sales of antacid the day after the Super Bowl!

Went to Walmart to get some avocados, there were none. You should have seen how many hispanics were walking around holding an empty produce bag, looking dazed and confused, looking for the avocados. I was pissed ! Was really in the mood for some.

My Tyson hot wings were all gone too, Had to buy another brand and its not as good.

Even though the following article was posted for Super Bowl 2012,
I think the math still holds for this year:

On Super Bowl Sunday, America consumes 101.25 BILLION calories, 6.75 BILLION grams of fat and 28.75 BILLION mg’s of cholesterol on chicken wings alone. On top of that, we’ll also consume 4.96 MILLION calories and 339.2 THOUSAND grams of fat of potato chips.

Not to mention the amount of pizza, chip dips, sauces and beer that will be consumed and all served in an “all-you-can-eat” buffet style manner.
It has been estimated that the average person will spend about $60 on food and merchandise in one day, coming in at about $18 BILLION total
while the highly coveted advertising spots only ring in at about $1.25 billion over the past 20 years!!

People have lost their fucking minds.

I just cannot stand this ignorant, gluttonous populous that I see everyday. And, to top it off, folks are mindlessly "participating" in today's events just to have their stake in such a "glorious event". Fuck that.

I don't watch NFL. I despise overinflated sports, along with the multimillion dollar players, and whatever billion dollar owners. Interestingly, I watch the people who participate in today's mindless debacle "choosing" which team to "root for" - as if they have some sort of relevant say in the way they are participating. Meanwhile, it's a fucking team that they DESPISED and/or never would have supported all year...ever.

Although, the psychology of this day is absolutely psychotic anyway. It's absolutely insane.

Honestly? I am not participating in any type of super bowl activity this year. After I read that article, I was totally disgusted with how much money is being spent on this game. I have not watched any commercials or videos and I have no interest at all in doing so. As far as I know, my sons are not participating in any type of celebration or party either.

I am having my own private boycott.

Here we've been talking about people without jobs, without insurance, without homes, without food who are struggling to survive.
America is on the verge of complete economic collapse, freedom continues to be taken away from us, many are having a hard time keeping their wits about them, anger continues to grow--people are hurting, they are suffering.

Yes, some of it is self-inflicting, some people know nothing else but to rely on others for their financial needs. But for the ones who have worked hard all their lives and had no hand in having everything stripped from them, their homes, their jobs, their security, I think about them. I think about how $80,000 spent on one football spectator seat could've been used to help someone who is truly needy.

Exactly, and so very well said. I'm actually doing the same thing - having my own personal boycott of today's "event". It's interesting that I'm fending off folks left and right on Facebook for the remarks I've made about not participating in today's "Super Bowl".

And what you said about the less fortunate people of our own, meanwhile spending millions/billions of $ on this day - I wholeheartedly agree. I just cannot comprehend why we have turned into who we are today...
