Anonymous Coward User ID: 34817368 France 02/22/2013 05:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Love to live near the south coast of France but my other half Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34628575 is not having it, i am half Italian but Italy is too expensive and on it's way down even further so France is the next best thing for me. Do it. And don't be put off by all the Brits moving away from here. We get this diaspora of people who come and go in waves. I've seen it happen about once every five years. Depends if you want to be in the hot south of the country or the colder north. |

Pick your criteria, do your homework and gtfo. Remember, you can travel and work anywhere in Europe, although that's not a great incentive, lol. Good luck |

If you've got the staying power you can make a good life in Southern Europe and the weather is better! Beer's cheaper too. lol |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 34936544 Greece 02/22/2013 05:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If I had the money to move out I would be on the first plain out of here There's often seasonal work in these countries. How old are you? Got a family or free to up and go? Plenty of young Brits work here April- Sept and lots stay a-y-r. Google the chatrooms, usually the workers keep in touch in the winter and they are a good source of info. Money's not great, but accom and food are cheap. If you don't like it, enjoy your hol and go back. Simples |

One thing you've got to do is learn to be able to turn your hand to anything, adjust and throw any unnecessary mental baggage out and look at life as a journey to be enjoyed and not a goal to be reached. |

Very true. You might not be able to follow your previous career here, esp if you were a taxidermist, lol, but if you are versatile and willing to get your hands dirty, you can do just fine. Hours are another thing too. Many in the tourist trade here work 7 days a week, often 12 hours or more. Sleep on the beach whilst working on the tan. |

I've got a pet theory as to why UK politicians tend to be so xenophobic. If people really knew how much better life can be out of their reach, everyone would leave. Well, all the actual Brits anyway, lol |

Well, all the actual Brits anyway, lol Absolutely spot on. Left there back in 1980 with a grand in my pocket and have never looked back. Work harder now than ever before and nearing 60. Life is truly what you make it and not what you let others make it for you. |

Shops, building, you name it. Thing is, you can live relatively cheaply here. Friend of mine is on 3,500 a year(!) and does fine. Bottom line, I suppose, is that we only get one bite at life. Better to try, even if we fuck-up royally than never to try and regret it. |

My only regret is not doing it a very long time ago. One guy here, Scandinavian as it happens, although I don't hold that against him, came out at age 19. Liked it, stayed. He's 60 this year too and boy has he had a ball. As you say though we all work a damn sight harder than before, but it's a pleasure to do it here and you actually get something back from it. It doesn't hurt that most of it doesn't go the exchequer either.. |

I'm on that plane already! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34628575 I know naff-all about the music business, so can only comment generally, but here, all we have really is tourism and we get quite a few traveling music/talent act folk coming through on the circuit. Hectic life, I'd imagine but they're here year after year. One expat who lives here, Frank Sinatra sound-alike, has just taken up a year's contract in Austria. Pack your instruments!! |
