I live up the hill from Kiama and for the first time ever, the back shed was flooded out. 100km/h winds plus rain like I have never seen outside of Cairns during the Wet.

In fact this past week or so, the weather has been decidedly tropical - Rains every night like clockwork. It's raining now as I type this - along with a big-arsed thunder and lightning show.

Asbestos fears for town hit by freak storm

People living in parts of Kiama on the New South Wales south coast could be moved from their homes as authorities try to deal with asbestos contamination after a freak storm.

At least three homes were destroyed and 170 damaged, with a significant amount of asbestos cement sheeting among the debris.

The cancer-causing material is dangerous when small fibres become airborne.

Preparations underway as cyclone Rusty intensifies

The Bureau of Meteorology says Rusty is likely to remain a slow moving system, making it difficult to predict exactly when and where it will cross the North West coast.

"The most likely outcome is that we end up with a very large, very intense tropical cyclone, moving slowly producing a lot of rain, a long period of destructive winds," he said.

"Basically, it really is a corker of a storm that we really need to be very prepared for."
