Mystery: Federally protected birds ~ CROWS ~ found dead
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - It sounds like something out of a Hitchcock movie, birds falling from the sky.

A woman found more than half a dozen dead crows in her yard and whoever is killing the birds could face federal charges.

The woman believes the crows were poisoned. Crows are a protected species and now the hunt is on to find whoever is responsible.

The Northwest neighborhood near Second Street and Osuna is eerily quiet except for during the early morning hours when Kathleen Brem says she hears a terrifying noise.

"Screaming, they're rolling trying to I guess deal with the pain," Brem explained. "To me I could see they were being poisoned."

Hi KoFFee!

Now I have to ask... why in the hell would crows be on a protected species list? Aren't they the most common bird species on earth? The're freakin everywhere.

You want crows: They are the official dumpster-divers of America. And half the size of, em, too. I bet they can rip the lids right off...

When I first moved to my neighborhood, the noisy birds were everywhere. Then in 2007, West Nile virus caused quite a decline in the numbers of crows and bluejays in my area.

This year is the first time I actually heard a crow again, still no bluejays though.

I do have a hawk that makes a daily visit to my front porch.

That's kind of cool.

I'm in southern IN. and they're common enough arround here. I like em actually. Smartest of all the bird species. They're fun to watch.

But like I said, why would they be a protected species. There's a shitload of em everywhere all over the world.

I believe this is the act under which they are protected :

Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918

The statute makes it unlawful to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill or sell birds listed therein ("migratory birds").

The statute does not discriminate between live or dead birds and also grants full protection to any bird parts
including feathers, eggs and nests.

Over 800 species are currently on the list.

Funny how so many crow species are federally protected yet my home state has a "no limit' policy with regard to hunting them.
