God's Garden Project
You are all Gardeners, in the Garden of God.

(The Universe, and more locally, for the moment, on the planet we call Earth...).

Each and every thought, word and action that is born from your Be-ing can be considered one of your child creations. You plant seeds with your energy, that grow in the direction of the intention they were planted with.

I am speaking in metaphors, but Gardening in real life can be one of the most natural and rewarding activities that we can do as humans. It's Divine.

It's in the recognizance of the sacredness of Gardening that I present to you my dream of the God's Garden Project!

My Vision is simple.

Each participant of the God's Garden Project will:

1. GROW any kind of food/vegetable/flower garden... grow whatever you like, how you like to grow it, in as big of a garden as you like.

2. GIVE some the fruits of that garden away, for free, in whatever way excites you the most. Give it all away, give only a small part of it away, give it to your neighbors, give it to strangers, etc. However and how much your Heart feels best.

3. CELEBRATE this idea:

"God is Unconditional Love"

Explanation:

When you love unconditionally, the Universal Abundance of God... God's Garden... is revealed to you.

This Abundance is all around you... you just have to open your heart (through unconditional love) to experience it.

God wants everyone to enjoy his Creation, as much as they can, as they prefer.

4. SEED the idea of the God's Garden project in others... get them excited about the beauty and simplicity of the concept. Your own garden will inspire others, and spin off it's own child gardens... and on and on, until the concept of having a God's Garden common to every home on Earth.

Bonus Points are awarded to:

- those that can grow their food organically, without using any chemicals or pesticides that are harmful to humans or the earth. Keep it natural as you can!
- those that can design their garden in a symbolic (non-religious) manner: spirals, circles, fractals, as a living artwork, as a mandala, etc.
- those that can involve their friends, family, neighbors and community in any part of the project. The more you Unite people, the more you and I win.
- those that can mesh other creative ventures into their garden...outdoor sculpture, theatre, art exhibits, music, dance....ANYTHING CREATIVE.
- those that can speak to God...in whispers, in your head, out loud... as you work in your Garden. Tell him what your intentions are...

Project Details:

The project will start now, and it will never end. Each growing season is another chance to try again.

Be Creative. Plan and tend your garden as you prefer. Celebrate God... just God... discreetly, or as loud as you can be. As you prefer.

Hint: To help things Grow, you must understand them. Only when you understand them, can you Love them. Loving is Growing. Love Yourself, and Love Your Garden.

If this idea excites you...RUN WITH IT!!! Post your stories and results on this discussion thread as you proceed. I will do likewise.

THANK YOU ALL!

Thank you Dr. Greenthumb, and good luck to you too! Do well.

It's no surprise to me that there are others here on GLP that are trying similar ideas or the same concept... I am hardly the first person to think of something like this, or even to come up with this as a name. There is a reason for this sychronicity... like is attracting like.

Those that are interested in this idea will run with it, those who are interested in something else will pass it on by. I hope all of us interested in this idea can get enough momentum going to make the idea of having a nonreligious God's Garden commonplace, everywhere.

Re: God's Garden Project
Never had a garden before? No biggie. Neither did I a few years ago, and I made every stupid mistake in the book getting going. It's really not hard, or expensive, to grow a LARGE amount of food.

This isn't a gardening forum, and I'm probably not qualified to answer your questions best anyways, but what I can do is help you see above, below, around and through any mental obstacles you may have in getting started.

For example, if you live in an apartment, you can grow food in pots and containers. If you have a house with a backyard, you can dig up some of the lawn, or expand any existing garden beds.

No land or space at all of your own to grow a garden in? No problem. Do any of your neighbors have a suitable backyard... might they be open to the idea? What about on your rooftop?

Want something bigger, but don't have a farm? I hesitated for a long time because I thought that first I would have to save up for some land, etc... Again, not having your own farm is no biggie... do you know that you can just approach a farmer, tell them what you want to do, and they may be open to renting you some fallow land they have for free? Or just rent a whole acre, like I did, and do what you want with it. Cost me $200 per acre, the cost will vary in your area though. Yes, I have to drive a little bit to get to my garden, and yes, you can buy a lot of veggies for $200... but that's not the point of all this, is it? This is fun for me, food for my soul, and deeply rewarding...there is no price I can put on this. And it would cost next to nothing if you wanted to rent less then a quarter acre from someone. Ask around... I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Everything you think, say and do is a choice towards the World that you prefer to exist. Discover what you like, and what you don't like...what you prefer... and live in that excitement as much as you can. The World you desire will reveal itself to you! This discussion thread "is" the web site for this project, for the time being at least. My Vision is so simple, so easy, and so repeatable that it needs nothing else other then the 4 principles or rules listed above. You will be able to tell remember the idea easily, and tell someone else about the idea in seconds.... and they will just "get it".

That said, in the future, as the energy behind the project "snowballs", people will create a variety of web postings, galleries and web sites etc., to showcase their gardens, network with others of similar gardening interests (say, people that like gardening in a particular way, or giving away the food in a particular way, or spreading the message of God's Garden in a particular way... People will unite as they prefer).

There are many other gardening resource web sites where you can find the technical details you are seeking right away. I highly recommend this site:

Re: God's Garden Project
Seeds. Let's talk about seeds for a moment...

Simply put, there are two different ways of growing a vegetable garden. You can put the seeds directly in the ground, or, you can "start" them in tiny pots indoors, in order to gain a "headstart" on the outside growing season.

Some plants are typically started indoors, and then transplanted outdoors, while others are typically started directly in the soil of your garden (they do not transplant well).

When it comes to seeds, there are also two rough choices: hybrid or heirloom seeds.

Hybrid seeds are the seeds of two hybrid plants that have been crossbred to produce a new type of plant. You can grow some amazing plants by using hybrid seeds. However, if you save the seeds and plant those new seeds next year, you will not get the exact same plant. Doing this over time may result in a plant that does not have the features you initially desired. If you are comfortable and confident that you will be able to get these seeds from a store each year, no problem. However, if you want to be more self-sufficient, and save your own seeds for planting the next season, you will want to look into heirloom seeds.

Heirloom seeds are those that are open-pollinated. Bees, and other insects cross-pollinate two different plants, and it results in seeds that grow "true" to the way they were originally created over time, by generations of plant breeders. Heirloom seeds are now found in every major seed supplier, and are basically the same price as hybrid seeds.

Learning to save the seeds of the plants that you grow also teaches you more about the biology of the plant, the circle of it's life, and it makes you more self-sufficient in the long run. Highly recommended!

Where can you get seeds?

My first recommendation may surprise you...the Dollar Store! I have found that many Dollar-type stores carry vegetable seeds, for 1/3 the price of what is commonly found elsewhere. And better yet, the seeds are often of the heirloom variety, and I have personally have had a good germination success rate from these seeds.

There are many other heirloom vegetable seed supply companies on the internet. Here are two worth checking out:

Urban Farmer Seeds [link to www.ufseeds.com]

and

William Dam Seeds [link to www.damseeds.ca]

(good for bulk seeds...you are going BIG with your dreams, aren't you? :tounge )

That's about all you need to get started with obtaining the seeds needed for your garden. It's cheaper then you think. The time to order seeds is NOW, because some plants that are started indoors need to be started soon (eggplants, tomatoes, etc.).

I hope this helped you!!!

Let me put it this way. If you Google the words "God's Garden", you will find many other people who are both literally gardening in the spirit of this term, as well as that all major religions use this concept in their symbolism and stories. The idea that all of creation can be considered God's Garden, and that we are not only designed to enjoy the fruits of this garden, but also to cultivate and respect this garden as coming from God...or, as I believe, as BEING God, resonates with people everywhere, in every culture across the planet.

This is no accident. This is no coincidence. We were born to make our own realities, our gardens, flourish... as we feel best.

Gardening IS Godly.

I believe God wants us to be the figurative gardeners of his creation, as much as we can, as we feel best in each of our unique ways, as we are all unique. The figurative spirit of gardening your reality is the same required to actually grow a garden. By respecting all of life and creation as a garden that you can partake in, of, and steward yourself, a lifestyle is afforded that all humans will appreciate and love. Gardening is Love.

I am here to help you, if this is something that you also want to do. Nothing can limit you. You don't need to rent an acre to do this... while my garden is about 1/4 acre at this point, it could be 2 feet square, and I would still be happy. I originally started out (and still do...) with container gardening on my back patio... I live in the middle of the city, where any garden beds are limited. I grow quite a bit in containers, it is very successful method of vegetable growing used by many people.

There is "always"... always... more possibilities then you think of. Nothing can limit you. Know that you can do it, and keep your eyes open for any possibility, no matter how unlikely...consider all possible options. If you can't garden in containers on your property, do you have a friend, a neighbor, someone living nearby (a friend you haven't met yet...) that you could ask?

Only a couple of years ago, I could barely keep a seedling alive. Anyone can be a part of this movement, at any scale!

Seedy Saturday Events

[link to www.seeds.ca]

Seedy Saturday or Sunday events are gatherings for those "interested in plant biodiversity, heritage gardening, organic gardening, and buying seeds". The events on that page are for cities across Canada; I think if you Google the term "seed exchange events", you will be able to find similar events where you live. They are great events for picking up seeds, getting gardening advice, meeting local small-scale market gardeners, and networking with other new and old gardeners who share similar interests.

Mention the God's Garden Project while you are there...THANK YOU!

Re: God's Garden Project
It's time to start certain indoor seedlings NOW!

I am in Canada, so my growing season may not be the same length as where you are, but for me, now is the time certain plants should be started indoors, to give them a good head-start on the natural growing season outdoors. The first seedlings that some people start at this time are onions, leeks, scallions and garlic. This is done now, because their growing season is so long... some things can be in the soil for up to seven months, as in the case of leeks.

Now is thus the time to buy your seedling trays, order your seeds, get your plant starter grow rooms set up (doesn't have to be complicated, a shelf by the window is fine), and to actually start the plants mentioned above.

Get growing everyone! hf

Re: God's Garden Project
hello asyouprefer, i ran into this thread yesterday and it has stayed in my consciousness. the more it sits there the more i love it. i am hoping to grow some food this year - i've tried before with a tiny bit of success. this year i have the seeds and a piece of decent land that i can use.
the most connected i ever feel to this life and my creator have been there digging in the soil and loving the little shoots that come popping miraculously up.
i tell my closest people that i have a , giving it away problem, meaning whatever i end up having i give at least a portion away. it sounds all good but sometimes it can be difficult to keep up with. honestly though, i am provided for in one way or another so i think it is a good thing. to give. and how much more so the giving of fresh food that one has laboured for in love. it makes the idea of gardening that much happier.
also , got my mind focused on what garden shapes i might try. i can see it with my mind's eye. it's happy just contemplating. much love to you asyourprefer. may jahjah bless you always.

Re: God's Garden Project
Planting "Seed Stars"

You may be familiar with the concept of "guerrilla gardening", where "seed bombs", small balls of dirt and seeds, are thrown into urban areas to create impromptu gardens. To promote the God's Garden project, I am employing a similar tactic, by handing out packages of seeds to strangers with the following note attached. I call these "Seed Stars", because I prefer this term and feel that it's connotation resonates better with this project. As mentioned in an earlier post, I can buy seeds very cheaply at the dollar store, so this idea basically costs nothing to me. Here is the text that I am going to print out and staple to each seed package:

"Hi Friend,

There is a reason you found this Seed Star today; it was meant for you. This package of free seeds comes to you from the God's Garden Project, which aims to spread this simple idea to everyone:

1. GROW any size or kind of Garden, even a potted plant is fine!
2. GIVE some of the fruits of your labor away to anyone you like!
3. CELEBRATE the idea that "God is Unconditional Love", without mentioning any religious belief! If you are Atheist/Agnostic in belief ("God" doesn't care what you believe btw...), that's equally fine, and you can simply celebrate the idea that "It's All about Love!".
4. SEED this idea with others to spread the Love!

Anyone can join this project just by following the "rules" above. We believe that God is Unconditional Love, and through this Love, Abundance is revealed all around us.

Happy Gardening, and THANK YOU!"

At first I thought about the idea of just leaving these packages around for people to find, but it's probably better idea to just hand them out to people, so please don't do that. It's also a chance to meet someone new, and get their feedback on what I am doing. If this crazy idea resonates with you, please join in! Just copy-and-paste the above text, print it out, staple to a seed package and you are good to go.

THANK YOU!

Re: God's Garden Project
With approximately nine or ten weeks left before the last frost date, we are now approaching the latest time when you would want to start your seedlings indoors, if you want to give them a jump on the growing season. I have to catch up in this area today myself. Remember that some plants do not fare well when started indoors, as they do not take to the transplanting process very well. Those plants must be started directly in the ground once the danger of frost has passed. Pumpkins would be a good example of such a plant. Other plants that you start indoors are more hardy, but they still need a period of "hardening off", a gradual introduction to the outside elements. This can be done by leaving your seedling room window open for small periods of time, or by keeping the seedlings outside, under plastic, to allow them to acclimatize to their new outside environment.

What plants are you starting indoors this spring?
