It is unfortunate that someone in attendance chose not to honor Colonel Stebbins’ request to respect the families’ right to know specifics of the investigation first.

That doesn't sound like standard policy to me. Possibly certain factual information regarding the manner in which a certain victim died, for example; but information on the accused, and his methods, his private information, even whether or not there were more shooters--that, and other investigative details are not anything a victim's family is necessarily privileged to on an ongoing basis. There are 27 families in question--not to mention that many have other children still in the home--law enforcement doesn't generally trust this many civilians with sensitive investigative material, at least not material that it doesn't want the general public hearing.

However, if this is a kidnapping case, then developing information might very well indeed be shared with families first.

The constant law enforcement spotlight on the families, smacks much more of an ongoing kidnapping scenario than a mass murder.

Hell, the CSP couldn't even trust its own guy with the info; no way it's going to hold ongoing meetings with 27 families keeping them apprised of every nitty gritty sensitive development. Not unless this is a kidnapping.

It's like, "How dare you leak that story, Joe, I was just planning on telling 54 parents and some of their kids that secret."

I just don't buy it.
