From this screen grab from earlier in the thread, it most likely looks like a boot sector/MBR was overwritten.

Perhaps if they were good, it also wiped all the hard drives with random data, and will have to be loaded from scratch with all data lost which was not backed up.

Unlikely, but possible it could also be a very sophisticated attack against the hard drive or BIOS firmware, rendering the hardware damaged and needing to be replaced. This would very technically difficult with all the permutations of different firmware types.
