I can definitely see this happening. My friends have a really smart daughter and before she was even 2 years old she was picking movies and starting them and everything on an ipad. |

Do all tablets and iPads have WiFi? The poor Thai people, they haven't a clue about most things modern... cell phones in constant use from the age of 8+ France and UK have banned WiFi in schools. Would like to read the google glasses disclaimer... and the cheap Chinese copies when they arrive |

They will be tools of knowledge. SO why not let th e children bask in them? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38677355 Need to ensure the Wifi/EMF isn't frying their DNA at the same time. Be nice to know if one can disable receptors/ I agree that tablets will boost learning skills massively |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38639127 Perhaps, like anything, it's a balance. Or perhaps at that age computers are simply not appropriate (Charlotte Iserbyt and Montessori schools believe this). Also, many computer games trigger a dopamine release that can very easily become highly addictive like heroine and can negatively impact proper growth and development of a toddler. If used, I definitely think it's best to limit the time a child spends on such devices. Also, there are plenty of other ways to help kids learn at that age that are not harmful. But, alas, I'm trying to explain this to someone who spends 12 hours a day on a Nintendo, so this will probably go in one ear and out the other. |

Parents use IPAD as a pacifier all the time, The kid must spend 5 hours a day minimum on it. Eats while playing, etc. Goes completely apesh-t when it's taken away. Not just your average hissy fit, but actually get's violent, attacking the offending parent with nails, teeth, and any available "weapon". Mother has required stitches from a bite already. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 38658062 Canada 04/22/2013 08:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Children as young as four are becoming so addicted to smartphones and iPads that they require psychological treatment. Quoting: Present and Aware Experts have warned that parents who allow babies and toddlers to access tablet computers for several hours a day are in danger of causing “dangerous” long term effects. The youngest known patient being treated in the UK is a four-year-old girl from the South East. Her parents enrolled her for compulsive behaviour therapy after she became increasingly “distressed and inconsolable” when the iPad was taken away from her. Her use of the device had escalated over the course of a year and she had become addicted to using it up for to four hours a day. Dr Richard Graham, who launched the UK’s first technology addiction programme three years ago, said he believed there were many more addicts of her age. Related Articles “The child's mother called me and described her symptoms,” he said. "She told me she had developed an obsession with the device and would ask for it constantly. She was using it three to four hours every day and showed increased agitation if it was removed." Dr Graham said that young technology addicts experienced the same withdrawal symptoms as alcoholics or heroin addicts, when the devices were taken away. That's insane. Probably partly dietary though, too. Kids on red dye 40, too much sugar and those with wheat/dairy allergies can be pretty out of control. But, likely is mostly that he/she experiences a dopamine withdrawal like a meth addict. |
Hitokiri User ID: 34845042 United States 04/22/2013 08:35 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My girlfriend’s’ friend came over the other day with her daughter who is about six or seven I'd say. When I opened the door she had her face buried in her iPad playing games. She came in, never took her eyes off of the damn thing. She walked in, sat on the floor, and just played games. Her mom was asking her questions to get her involved in our conversation and she had to ask her the same question over and over and over because she wasn't paying attention. I was asking about her new shoes she had on because you could tell they were new and I heard that she just got a couple pair of new converse shoes she was really proud of. Even when they left she never took her eyes off the thing with her mom saying, "Say goodbye... say goodbye." She finally said goodbye but never lifted her head all the way to the car. So sad...
