I believe Mr. Meier had prior contact and after publicly disclosing his visits, he had many thousands of people harassing him, so he decided to purposefully create a fake ship to rid himself of further public harassment.

Think about it for a minute. Would you care what others thought if you were actually having contact and knew it to be true?

How would you get people to leave you alone so that the visits would resume again?

I think Mr. Meier did what any smart person would do. He made a fake to be debunked.
