Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22819525 "Officials in Oklahoma have revised to 24 the number of bodies recovered after a tornado devastated the town of Moore, Oklahoma. Earlier, 51 people were reported killed. Officials attributed the higher number to counting bodies twice in the chaos following the storm that struck late Monday." [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 29295379 United States 05/21/2013 08:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Something that struck me as odd were the extreme variations in the death toll from the Oklahoma tornado yesterday. I was watching MSM coverage and switched over the a local OK news stream while dozing off. Quoting: What_Happened?!@ 33719275 The anchors on the local station were speaking to the local medical examiner who said they had 51 bodies (20 children) at the morgue and were expecting another 40 bodies to be delivered. So at around 12:20am PST there was a death toll given of 91. About 5 minutes after that report the local feed went dead. (Not to static, but to a tones and bars like the signal went down or was cut.) When I awoke this morning the media was now reporting that there were 24 fatalities attributed to the tornado. Thats a difference of close to 70 bodies. They also seemed to be very careful in releasing death toll figures, I believe official death toll reports were given to the media at 3 different times during the night (as more and more bodies were found). How could the medical examiner made such a mistake? I believe I also heard the governor of the state claim there were 51 dead while on a telephone interview with CNN around 11:30 pm PST. If this was a "erroneous" statistic why was it reported by the state and local medical examiner numerous times and then redacted? The whole thing strikes me as odd...anyone else? HOWEVER, IF ALL THE U TUBE AND NEWS POSTS OF THE TORNADO ON THE GROUND WERE UFO'S, NO DOUBT THAT THE MEDIA AND GOVERNMENT WOULD HAVE SAID THAT THEY WERE SWAMP GAS, WEATHER BALLOONS, CHINESE LANTERNS, OR HOAXES. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 33719275 United States 05/21/2013 08:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't want there to be more dead. I am not claiming it's a conspiracy. I just said it struck me as odd that a governing entity that puts so much time, money and effort in to large scale disaster drills, agencies, and preparedness could make such a mistake. Additionally it happened in a county that has had multiple EF4-5 tornados in the past, so this wasn't their first time on the bull. As I said in the first post, the local medical examiner stated they had 51 bodies in their POSSESSION. When asked about the 40 additional bodies the medical examiner stated that they "didn't want to make assumptions, but they were told another 40 bodies were on their way" I did not watch the news this morning and when speaking with a co-worker I was somewhat surprised when they reported that only 24 people had been killed. Someone else at work thought the same thing I did as they stopped watching the coverage as of last night. If it was a miscount it goes to show you how well the money is being spent. I guess the Federal Body Counting Agency came in over the night and set things straight in Moore County. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 39837390 United States 05/21/2013 08:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was watching CNN into the wee hours last night. They brought in the anchors based in the US, but have an "international" themed show. Kinda like the reverse of Fareed Zachari, who basically runs an international styled show intended for americans to watch. They probably had a late shift like that anyway for early morning Eurasian broadcasts on the actual CNN international stations. They did the "breaking: 40 more dead bodies are on the way to the coroners office" scroll. Then then did the "exclusive". Then they did the "developing". Then they did actual reporters saying "confirmed: 40 more fatalities". started repeating it with live and canned footage. I busted out my James Earl Jones Vader "Noooooooooooo!" And thats what fixed it! Just kiding. Honestly, when they said confirmed I let out a little girl wimper and prayer to the boss upstairs. |

AlaskaLove User ID: 33563100 United States 05/21/2013 08:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | do you remember the news during 911? I remember their being claims of 19,000 dead, then 6000 was common for a day or so until the final number was finally realized. When a catastrophic event like this occurs it is difficult to get accurate information. I love you. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 33719275 United States 05/21/2013 09:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Another thing that struck me as odd is how were they able to scour such a large area for bodies/parts in such a short time. A 2 miles wide, 200 mph, grinder that traveled a very long distance make a pretty big mess in an extremely large area. |
