My first thought was Thermophiles, but the 2nd one that they are found for example around Black Smokers or in Hot Springs but not in Lava itself. Chemical Reaction due to special composition of Gases etc. in the Lava ? Anyway, looks beautiful, would make a nice green Obsidian Knife or Arrow tips. This has to be from an active volcano in near coast! |

They would need to hit it with an XRF to find out what colored it On a side note there are tons of old iron furnaces around here "The giant stone ones" and man made obsidian (The slag) is everywhere in the creeks. From bright blues, greens, to dark purples... |

Excuse me for talking BS, just came from the morning shift when I wrote it (the talk about green obsidian, which exists no question, but not about the possibility of a nearby Volcano (extinct or sleeping). A with this. Last Edited by Trickster on 05/22/2013 12:42 PM And Miles to go before I sleep, miles to go before I sleep.... |

I never meant from my statement to be taken as "it can be man made" just the part, that only a ppm scale change is needed for color to change in minerals. |

Green beeches exist... those which usually involve olivine *Hawaii* as an example...Green obsidian *naturally occurring from a volcanic source* is quite rare...I have personally not heard of an occurrence of this. *But my BS in Geology can only go so far.* |
