The journalist who broke the news that the government is monitoring vast quantities of American phone records is claiming the U.S. is building a “massive” snooping apparatus committed to destroying privacy worldwide.

“There is a massive apparatus within the United States government that with complete secrecy has been building this enormous structure that has only one goal, and that is to destroy privacy and anonymity, not just in the United States but around the world,” charged Glenn Greenwald, a reporter for the British newspaper “The Guardian,” speaking on CNN. “That is not hyperbole. That is their objective.”

Even before the revelation this week of the National Security Agency’s spying on citizens, a trio of major scandals already had Democrats worried about the health of President Obama’s second-term agenda.

In May, as immigration-reform took center stage, friendly pundits advised Obama to restore the political momentum stymied by the Benghazi, IRS and reportergate scandals by appointing a special investigator, asking for Attorney General Eric Holder’s resignation and not appointing polarizing Susan Rice as national security adviser or nominating far-left activist Samantha Power as ambassador to the United Nations.

Obama has resolutely rejected every one of those suggestions, and now, with the report Thursday that his government has been tracking the calls of millions of Americans, Democrat political analyst Doug Schoen says “Obama’s agenda is essentially dead in the water.”

“His days, and his administration’s days, are now spent playing defense – in press conferences, in hearings and elsewhere,” Schoen wrote in a Forbes.com column Friday.

USA Today, meanwhile, reported Obama’s agenda has been “scorched” in a “firestorm of scandals.”

After his failure to pass gun-control legislation, Obama hopes to pass a comprehensive immigration bill in the fall that effectively would provide amnesty for more than 11 million illegal aliens who likely would become reliable Democrat voters. He also seeks a budget deal he hopes will put him in a favorable position in the 2014 midterm elections.

But with congressional investigations well under way on the White House handling of the Benghazi attack, the IRS targeting of conservative tea party groups seeking non-profit status and the Justice Department’s use of secret subpoenas and search warrants against reporters, the “firestorm” Thursday was especially problematic for Obama, USA Today said.

This week’s revelations about the federal government collecting massive amounts of communication data on American citizens has the country’s most-listened-to radio voice saying President Barack Obama is leading a coup against the nation.

“What everybody knows and what nobody wants to come to grips with is we are in the midst of a coup taking place,” talk-show host Rush Limbaugh said Friday afternoon. “It’s almost on a par with [when I said] ‘I hope he fails.’ How does that sound now, by the way?”

“What’s wrong with calling this a coup?” he continued. “There’s a lot here to be concerned about.”

“This is the guy, don’t forget, convincing people that this kind of stuff was never going to happen here. … This is the guy who got elected president by telling us that what is happening now was never going to happen when he was president. … He got elected warning us that what was happening now was happening in 2008. … [Now] it’s more sweeping than it’s ever been.”

These organizations and groups can fuss till they turn blue in the face. But when will they wake up to the fact that the 2 party system will never break from this behavior?

The New York Times' Clair Cain Miller has the best report yet, which reconciles the initial reports about PRISM (a way for the government to monitor internet traffic) and the tech company claims that the government has no "direct access" to their servers.

Scary stuff.

The Obama administration’s legs are wobbling under the weight of so many scandals lately that whole chunks of the edifice – the IRS, the NSA, the DOJ – are threatening to implode, particularly without support from the normally adoring media.

Even the New York Times – the New York Times! – is no longer willing to bolster an administration whose totalitarian urges have been exposed to the light.

Let’s begin with the Internal Revenue Service’s thuggish targeting of conservative groups.

Edward Snowden, who is reportedly hiding out in Hong Kong, leaked information about the PRISM program and presumably gave the publication documents about how the federal government has obtained court orders to force Verizon to turn over the private and international phone records of all of its customers on an ongoing basis.

Snowden is described as "a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of the defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton," who has been "working at the National Security Agency for the last four years as an employee of various outside contractors, including Booz Allen and Dell."

After the Washington Post broke the story about the NSA's PRISM program, the Guardian revealed more details, including the three billion pieces of intelligence the NSA reportedly collected from American computer networks over a 30-day period ending in March of 2013. The article, though, is not clear about what specific pieces of information Snowden leaked.

Snowden said he leaked the the various NSA documents because he felt the agency was "intent on making every conversation and every form of behavior in the world known to them," and he believed this posed an "existential threat" to democracy.

He is currently hiding in Hong Kong and may try to get asylum in Iceland because of its "reputation of a champion of internet freedom."
