Obama economy - Cash-short drivers forced to rent tires for transportation to/from work
.

Like payday lenders, pawn shops and Buy Here Pay Here used-car lots, tire-rental businesses provide ready credit to consumers who can’t get a loan anywhere else. But that access doesn’t come cheap.

When the tires on their Dodge Caravan had worn so thin that the steel belts were showing through, Don and Florence Cherry couldn’t afford to buy a new set.

So they decided to rent instead.

The Rich Square, N.C., couple last September agreed to pay Rent-N-Roll $54.60 a month for 18 months in exchange for four basic Hankook tires.

Over the life of the deal, that works out to $982, almost triple what the radials would have cost at Wal-Mart Stores.

“I know you have to pay a lot more this way,” said Florence Cherry, 57, a nurse who drives the 15-year-old van when her husband, a Vietnam veteran, isn’t using it to get to his job as a prison guard. “But we didn’t really have a choice.”

Socked by soaring tire prices and short on funds, growing numbers of Americans are renting the rubber to keep their cars rolling.

I work at a hospital.
Nurses get $33/hr. (Don't know what a prison guard makes) but there's 2 incomes there. Van is 15 years old, certainly paid for.
Someone isn't budgeting their money well.

They could have gotten used tires for $100 if they looked, and it wouldn't take much looking.

most don't have the credit to own a credit card, and can't
afford a whole set at $500+

and as one person in the article noted: “When you’re working
paycheck to paycheck, your options are limited,” Florence
Cherry said.

I'm calling BS.
Not on the OP nor the story.
But the woman in the story.
She obviously cannot maintain a budget. Fulltime nurses make about $70K a year. Husband surely gets a VA pension + he works as a prison guard (read gov't job) and probably makes good money. Only 1 car between the 2 of them, less gasoline & insurance bills. If the husband is a vietnam vet, he probably is over 65 years old; time for Social security to kick in.

No, these people are bad money handlers. I have no pity for them. Like previous posts said, they can buy used tires, or cheapo ones. Renting tires, like doing payday or title loans, shows bad financial judgement.

(edit) As much disdain as I have for obama, no can't blame him nor the economy on this. These people both have jobs, and would be in the same predicament even if the economy was booming.

You are assuming she is a RN not a CNA and you are assuming that they aren't helping adult children who are disabled or laid off, and that they went paying off massive debt from a major illness, etc.

Doubt it.
If she had a pity story, legitimate or not, they would have printed it to show how poor and desperate they were.

But then again, maybe I'm being too cynical. As a member of the working poor, I see way too many people living much better on welfare & benefits, choosing not to work. While I am not eligible for welfare because I work full time.

Obama economy hah.. Had the other dudes won, she'd not have needed to rent tires to go to work as she would already have been unemployed, the car repossessed, and she would have been living in a cardboard box behind that prostitute hotel in the slums back there

She needs to open an account with a credit union and take out a loan there. The one I belong to will do up to $1000 loans, even with poor credit. The catch is you pay 18% interest, but it's still cheaper than paying what they are paying to these shysters.
