Mass Shooting At Muni-Meeting - Poconos - Reporter's account: 'All I saw was holes go through the wall'

Not too far away from me. Since I work in a Municipal office, I really see both sides of this one. I know nothing of this guy or his story, he sounds like he's probably got some big time mental issues, and being taken away from his home, despite what a dump it was, probably pushed him over. I hate the rules too, and I feel really bad for some of the people coming in, trying to comply, not having any money, etc. etc. But, you guys who are defending his right to live any way he wanted, if he's dumping his poop in the stream (and I have no idea if he was) and polluting your water and you and your kids get sick, how is that right? What's the answer, I don't know. Whatever it is, it's not going in and blowing people away with a gun. I don't know if "they" wanted his land, maybe they just wanted him to not pollute what he did have. Anyway, nothing will help the dead ones, or him, now.

I don't really attempt to have an answer, but I am kinda sure you have a case of a bully state, and a fragile mind. This is always the combination we talk about after all of these shootings. . . Yeah time to round up the mentally unstable. . . Woo Hoo.

Just about every rural area has a guy like this. The fortunate ones have a friend or two to help them out and prevent the township, county or whatever from forcing them out of their homes. The sad thing is, that local government councils seem to be mostly made up of the hyenas, and using the force of the law to evict these people seems to be their only tactic.

Here we have a clash of individual rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness against the collective, the "greater good".

Where can a guy like him go anymore?

I don't doubt that, but it sounds more like the town grew out to him, probably handled poorly on both sides...

But the .gov uses violence and the threat of violence to enforce the status quo. Sanctioned violence is good. Unsanctioned violence is bad. Unsanctioned violence will be punished where sanctioned violence will be as quickly rewarded.

The fuck. We loved being in this beautiful part of the world, but damn me, yes, there isn't much hope. We had to come back to an urban area to try to make more stinking money. Part of the rural exodus. Rural NE scene is bad. The generational white poverty and addiction problem gets very little press. But it's a big, big problem.

You know of these services, but did anyone make him aware of them? I don't read anywhere that anyone other than one friend ever tried to help or direct him. Where were Christian support groups, senior citizen helpers, Meals On Wheels, anybody?

I help people. Young people, older people, Black, White, Red, Yellow, Baptist, Pentecostal, Atheist. I don't get paid, but I am rewarded for it. A smile from some is worth more than jewels from others.

If people had helped him to clean up and taught him about services to help him live better, wouldn't they have helped themselves and their property values while helping him?

Couple things you need to know...(I live near there...trust me this) after 9/11 all the rude ducking assailed from New York City moved up there. Pushed all of the locals and hunters out. It's horrible there...it used to be God's country before they showed up. Now they all catch busses in Tobyhanna and and can be in NYC in an hour and a half. Second, they may have shut down coal mines, but small property owners are making a fortune in leasing their land out for fracking.

This is more of a civil war starter than that little bitch boy getting slapped by the cop.

Once youre against a township...youre fucked unless you got deep pockets. Even then, you have to worry that the judge isnt a buddy of someone on the board (which they usually are).

Since a lot of GLPers seem to live in NE PA how about we all get together for a beer?

Ross Township hopes to buy a Flyte Road property, deemed an eyesore and up for sheriff's sale next month, to clean it up and remove what it calls a stream obstruction.

Ruling in the township's favor, Monroe County Court last August ordered Rockne Newell, 59, to vacate and never again occupy or use the property, unless he has the proper permits to do so.

The township's efforts to take over the land he's owned since 1990 are the latest development in an 18-year battle against Newell.

"This is total (horse excrement)," said Newell, who has been living out of his 1984 Fiero and in abandoned buildings since being ordered to vacate.

"They have no right to kick me off my property. They call my property an 'eyesore.' When I bought it, it was one of only three properties on the entire road that didn't have what they call 'junk.'"

This is what civil wars begin with...

That's a nice concept . . . reminds me of an episode of Andy Griffith, when the old guy owed the city taxes and his place was a mess and the town got together and fixed it up and painted it . . . in an ideal community, that's how it should be.

But this is America, 2013.

This guy hardly seems like a small town's nice elderly guy who just needed some neighborly support.

He had been in this dispute for 18 years!

The story says he has been "unemployed for years due to an injury from a crash" ... HOW injured is he? Could he not work at all?

The article says his property has "visibly cluttered items, including tires, cinderblocks and piles of lumber" ... the assumption would be that HE put them on the property and those things are ALL very heavy items. Says he's a scrap dealer and that requires a good degree of physical activity.

So if he could do all that for the past many years, then he could probably have gotten a labor-related job.

Read some of the comments at the end of the article - his neighbors know how filthy his place is.

He appears to be a defiant old dude who does not give one damn about hygiene or polluting the land.

NOw you think this guy should have gotten help from religious groups or senior citizen helpers (he would have been 41 when this dispute began) and maybe someone could have taught him about proper living - but likely not because he seemed to be very defiant about the entire matter.

You help those who TRULY need help, and sometimes that's not altogether easy to know for sure, but the truth is, some people are just lazy and filthy and have no respect for this great planet.

Here's a comment by one of his neighbors who posted at the end of the article:

There is litter scattered throughout the entire property and in the stream, ranging from empty plastic containers, to tires, to rusty scrap metal, to insulation, to plastic buckets strewn around. I wish I could post a picture on here because his land is GROSS and is CERTAINLY an eye-soar to everybody around it. This property needs a heavy duty cleaning, im sure they're multiple environmental infractions here as well. He needs to stop complaining and start cleaning!!!!!!!!

I guess the county will get his land now. Of course he made them pay for it in blood.

Earlier before I even read this I was telling my wife how I really don't want to own anything that I can't carry around. There really is no such thing as ownership. You get rent property if they don't want it. That is all.

It isn't right to take another persons property. Period. Fine him, arrest him, whatever. Maybe act like a good civil servant and find a way to help him into compliance. Drop off a county owned dumpster and maybe a few gallons of paint from the county tool shed. Work with him in some creative way.

Don't take what isn't yours. It might cost you in blood.

They saw dollar signs and an opportunity to steal land from somebody who they figured couldn't fight them; someone with a mental illness.

Oh, so now its all about "There are rules and laws, AND YOU CANT BE ABOVE THE LAW!" Well, to put it into perspective- there is no one that is above the State, and its agents. We are all 'below' them and we can never be above the State and its agents, THERE IS NO APPEAL ABOVE THE STATE AND ITS MONOPOLY ON THE "JUST-US" SYSTEM. That just got revoked by Rockne Newell, 4 for 1.

It makes you wonder with eighteen years of legal wrangling, did anyone from the township ever bother to ask him nicely to clean up his place?!?!?

Do govt officials even remember what asking nicely is?!?!?

Politeness goes a long way with a lot of these old timers guys...

If it was that big of a deal why not just fine him and then use the money to drop off a dumpster? Tell him to fill it up or he'd get fined again.

They didn’t really care about him cleaning up the place. They just wanted him gone. And wanted to sell his property to someone else that would be a “more desirable neighbor”.

I wonder who at the on the City Counsel is suprized ?

You know I was laying in bed thinking about this story, and I wondered what Presidents like JFK or Ronald Reagan would have made of this tragedy?

And I think JFK or Reagan either one would have used that story to try to urge Americans to reach out and help their neighbors to make their community better...

Then I wonder, what would Obama say about this tragedy? And I can only think he would try to use it to his political advantage as a call for more gun control...
