It's been really heavy rad showing up in readings and mutations in the central US - plant life and fruit/veg - where they get a lot more rain/snow even than the coastal areas

OP, gonna presume your sources are either purposely overstating the numbers or are are woefully lacking in basic math skills. They're completely wrong. And first year student taking a basic course in particle physics would giggle at what your "sources" claim.

If I may regress for a moment. In my limited understanding of nuclear physics, it was understood that if a certain amount of U235, at a certain purity, reached a "critical mass", there would be a nuclear explosion. At some point, would it be possible for this melted material to reach these critical levels?

I remember when this happened, and how quickly afterwards that people around me got tired of hearing about it. And all this time it has never stopped. The suppression of information boggles the mind, and is a crime of sickening magnitude.
