Y2K Bug happened because people in the past century always wrote dates like MM-DD-YY, or DD-MM-YY depending on the country, but NEVER like MM-DD-YYYY

World War II was known for starting on 09-01-39 and not 09-01-1939

Using 4 digits for the year was never the norm. It's a temporary fad, typical of the first years of this century, but eventually people will start to use just 2 digits fort the year again
