I've had quite similar sentiments, OP.

Occasionally I am overcome by the sensation that I am laying on a hospital bed somewhere comatose and hooked up on life support.

Like you expressed, there is this constant striving and a desperation for answers, for truth, for salvation, for forgiveness and for redemption.

One might find temporary solace in religion or scripture only to find that no matter how hard they try they will NEVER be 'good enough'.

The world is designed in such a way that we are bombarded and assailed with temptations and our vices are usually so easily available.

Some people decide to live an austere, solitary life. Retreating to some monastery or convent somewhere to spend their lives reflecting, contemplating, meditating and turning within.

Yes all the mystic schools of thought will urge you to look inside of yourself for the truth. But the truth will always be what ever we make of it as we paint our world views, perspectives, ideals and realities on that pitch black canvas of nothingness right behind our eyelids.

When we look to the "outside" world for happiness we soon realize that we must succumb to a 'daily grind', having to exert all our time, energy and resources to things we don't REALLY want and most of the time do not REALLY believe in just so that we can survive.

We are given some pleasantries, like inmates making trips to the commissary cart, and for a time we are reasonably placated.

Yet, when it all comes down to it. We will always be truly alone.

I agree, OP, this reality could be "Hell". A much scarier, more horrific and more tragic "Eternal Ending" than some lake of fire, if you ask me.

Exactly. This constant searching for the truth and for meaning... it's being kept in the dark. We are in the dark. (The Pit). We are alone and afraid and confused. The "burning" in Hell is not a literal burning by actual fire... it is the eternal "burning" of your soul in a place that makes no sense and filled with all the misery one can imagine.

We are consumed with 'burning desires' - for freedom, for love, for shelter, for survival, for continuity, for truth, for wealth, for power, for happiness, etc.

I'm reminded of the Buddhist teaching that all 'desire' leads to suffering.

While sitting around and meditating, eyes closed, humming or chanting a mantra is all well and good and enlightening but sooner or later you will have to get up, walk your way to the bathroom, drop your pants and squat to take a shit or piss like every other creature on this planet.

Some could say that they are "more than their physical body" yet go as long as you can without urinating or defecating, see how long you can go without eating or drinking, how long can you hold your breath?

There in would lie the grim reality of "eternal suffering".

Dangle the promise of 'eternal happiness' if you are a good little slave here on 'earth' in this 'life' only to be popped right back in another sack of flesh and blood for a 9-month solitary confinement than squeezed back out into the 'general population'.

And think of the mind fuck! Everywhere you turn there is either someone better off than you or someone worse off than you. Always forced to compare yourself to the haves or the havenots. Some days may be better than most days. Climb a ladder, get a raise, make a mistake, lose your job, get pushed back down the ladder.

All external happiness will always be fleeting. Everything you cherish and hold onto will fade away. Even your memories.

The only thing that people say is 'lasting' is legacy but carving out a name for yourself here is about is useful as tagging your name or a doodle on a prison cell wall.

Tried all that. God did not answer. Life did not change. Things only got worse.

So first attack OP. Make assumptions. Say their 'understanding of life' is 'seriously flawed' indicating that OP is 'seriously flawed' or somehow mentally defective.

Throw an 'assumed' fact as if it is absolute truth at OP. Give a 'suggestion' which is really a passive aggressive 'demand'. Have OP 'imagine' a corresponding result of following such suggestion.

Top it off with not one but two generic and practically universally known scripture verses that will pull up all sorts of emotional, psychological and sociological triggers in OP.

Define your understanding of pleasure.

Some people take pleasure in consumerism. Others find it extremely disturbing.

Homosexuals take pleasure in banging other men in the can. Is that not a sin?

Pleasure does not mean you are not in Hell.
