Within a week without food you won't have the energy left to do anything you fools. Nobody will make it over 5 days without having to do whats nessesary to survive especially those with children to think about. Get a grip! |

Obviously you have never fasted in your live. I feel good after 5 days on nothing but water. And as has been said here already, kids can be tougher than you can imagine. IF you raise them right... |

It's the sick folks who will go first. We have a renter who is 250-300 pounds. We worry about how the hell we would get him out of the place if shtf. He is diabetic. It'll take several people to get him out. That's one of my biggest worries about shtf, seriously. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17556791 And, some Family members on meds. Without them, they're probably going to go mad. It'll be like having rabid dogs all around you when the mental folks start going off their meds. Diabetics that need insulin will die pretty quickly. And lock up those who can't get their meds. So many people on these psych meds. Now that is scary. People take them like they are candy. I already told a few of my friends jokingly that they will just have to be tied to a tree until they go through withdrawals. They laugh. sort of.LOL |

People are so sick and addicted now, any change in diet will be VERY painful, not from the lack of food, but from the withdrawal from the chemicals and sugar. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46356676 It will feel like they are dying, when in truth it is what they really need to become healthy. You are absolutely correct. My Family has been in a bind for the last several months. Because of this, we have been eating mostly veggies from our garden. We've lost a lot of weight, however, I really, really wish I could buy some of the convenience foods and snacks I used to. It's tough, very tough. You know, when I buy potato chips I can eat a whole bag and still not feel full. But when I make my own chips I just fill up pretty quickly which really says something about the difference between junk food and real food. And I get my 'junk' food kick with them without the junk food crap in them. Better to make your own snacks. But I know sometimes there is no substitution for chemicals we crave. Keep fighting it and eventually the cravings will go away. If you go back to eating them they might even make you sick. |

Oh God, I couldn't imagine eating that fat fucker, yuk. Have a good friend that's like that...5'7", 240, heart valve, bad knees (duh), and he eats enough for at least 2 twice a day (plus snacks). He would never make it in a SHTF scenario...and I would never give him access to my preps as he would eat them all... I believe there would be a massive die off in the first few weeks leaving extra food for those who survive. We really forget how many people are so sick and being kept artificially alive. Even the detox druggies would go through would kill them. |

It depends on whether the person has kids or not. I would not be able to see my children go a week without food before resorting to extreme measures. Quoting: dawnie Kids are tougher than you give them credit. This is your hang-up, not theirs. If there is a little food, then you give it to the kids. Duh. What is the alternative? Go out breaking into stores and then they have no dad at all.... Adults could definitely go without food for the kids. Well, most loving adults could. |

How many people have never missed more than one meal their whole life? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46356676 I eat 300 calories at noon then have a light dinner. Even maybe a light snack before bed. Even that is a lot of food for me. I have done the one meal a day and have been fine. The stomach shrinks and you can't eat a lot anyway. So you make the food you eat really count. Skipping one meal is easy. |

Yeah, but try explaining that to young kids and babies who really need food. Parents will go into fight/kill mode for them. Try being around a kid screaming and crying from hunger and see what you would do. You would do ANYTHING to stop their pain. Yeah, lots of people have hypoglycemia. It makes them crazy and angry if they aren't fed at certain intervals. That comes from improper diet. This can be turned around with a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables. That is no excuse, just another cop-out... Change your diet. How many are willing to do that? I know. Thank goodness I have no health problems and can easily go a day without eating. Plus, I have trained myself to not have to eat a lot. Getting off junk food has really helped. I eat more vegetables now and some fruit since I really don't like too many sweet things. |

Ramen noodles. You can put a weeks worth of calories in a large ziplock bag. That being ramen noodles and they only weight 3 pounds. Ramen noodles have enough energy and calories in them to sustain you believe it or not. Buy 25 of them and take out of the package and crush and fill a large ziplock bag with them and then put the pouches in the bag. Increibily these will sustain you. A top survival guy worked it out and they even beat MRE"S for calories and cut down on the room needed for them. Ramen noodles are cheap and light. A months of of food in 3 ziplocks weighing only 12 pounds. Everybody and anybody can do and carry this. in a bug out bag. |

BTW, the inner bark of pine trees can be boiled for food. And the pine needles can be boiled for tea. They are very high in vitamin c which we need. Most places have some form of pine trees. As for 'real' food I would try to have some beef jerky on hand. It is light and you can travel with it. And you don't have to eat much of it to survive. |

As a white kid growing up in a trailer park with a crazy mama, I was hungry more often than not. The longest I ever went without food was four days. I did not kill anyone or steal. Hunger was pretty much a constant my entire life until I moved to California at 24. The poster that said you really do not feel hungry after the third day is correct. A more precise answer is that once your body becomes accustomed to hunger, it's really not a big deal. The majority of American's would freak. They probably have never felt true knawing hunger like I felt as A kid. Could I endure it again? Yes, without a doubt, but unlike my Mom I would rob, steal, and fight to insure my kids did not. |

Freaking out, killing people. and breaking into stores after only one week doesn't have anything to do with hunger, it has to do with a lack of moral fiber to behave yourself no matter what. Crime is not caused by economic realities but by immorality’s exposure to opportunity. Most Americans during the great depression didn't freak out, but then again, America use to be referred to a "Christian nation". We were more moral back then. Quoting: Resister Thanks to Obama and others like him, the public has been turned away from the whole idea of morality for morality's sake. Obama and Co. have told the sheople masses that they can't do anything on their own but deserve what other people have as a "right". John Adams responded to a question about what kind of constitution had been given to the American people with this. "The constitution was written for a moral and upright people and is wholly inadequate for the governance of any other." Taking his observance into consideration, you can expect immoral people in places that are already falling apart like Detroit and Chicago to turn into bunch of savage animals. Traditional moral Americans will simply make due with what they have for as long as they can because that is the right thing to do. So very true and so very well said. The only thing really missing in the American diet is moral fiber. The weaker-minded and self-centered individuals will panic and steal in a day or less without access to food. The stronger-minded, self-aware, and morally strong individual will endure, help others, and work to help himself and those around him find food as well. Even if starving to death, they die with a kind of dignity that accepts the fate without killing the man next to him because he might have food...or be food. People handed the necessities do grow to think they are entitled to everything. They will sit around like baby birds with their mouths hanging open saying "feed me, feed me." I pity anyone in a large city or crowded area, When there are too many rats in the cage...we all know what will happen when the food is taken away. The elderly, the weak and the children will fall by the wayside as the stronger trample them to get any food...then return later to... |
