Then, once the gas runs out, then the nukes come out.

I believe the last estimates were two weeks if a World War broke out. THink the world consumes alot of oil now? Wait until all the military equipment is rolled out for 200 million men and women.

In 1987 the Russians had about 2,500 long-range missiles, ICBM and SLBM and 9,847 warheads. The total has been reduced but they could easily re-arm 2000+ missiles with conventional multi-warhead payloads.

The USA has less than 1/3 of what the Russians have. We wouldn't stand a chance against Russia in a MISSLE to Missile shootout.

It would probably last 4-6 years.

American air power would last as long as its carriers, which would eventually be sunk by a combination of Silkworm and Iskander missiles (notwithstanding the occasional lucky sub). The US has a big economy and some kick ass hardware but it would soon find itself struggling to procure the necessary funds in a tanking economy. In the event of war Russia and China would dump their holdings of US debt while the Arabs strangle the oil supply. It would be a painful start to any hypothetical conflict like this that involves these players.

In the end it would come down to WHERE the war is being fought. If it was in Asia then the US would be horribly outnumbered and outgunned. If it was on North American soil, the US would have the odds in its favour and the help of Canada.

In a nuclear war, Russia would win with sheer warhead numbers and land-mass size. Then again, the world would be uninhabitable afterwards.

First OP, it would not stay conventional for long... it would eventually go nuke once side X started to lose... after the first launch, you have about 20-25 minutes depending on launch origin. After that, 50% out right die, others follow in days/weeks due to illness, disease, etc. Within a few months 98% dead. Those that survive would inherit a world (assuming they did not launch Omega devices) of misery...eventuality is that 100% of life would die... thus proxy wars will only be fought, chances of WWx escalating to the point of no return is too great...
