A very close friend developed a "zero rear impact" no-crash system involving sensors in highway lanes over fifty years ago and got royally screwed over by one of the American Big Three. Guess what systems are being implemented today? Every new highway system (re)laid today incorporates said sensors (for future use).

This is one of the greatest technological advancements in history. Once everyone has their own self driving car, car crashes will be virtually inexistent, speed limits will be much higher, insurance will be much lower, and police will be freed up to focusing real crime instead of trying to catch people committing traffic violations.

Not to mention the fact that families will now really only need one or two cars at most.

For example: Dad goes to work and sends the car back home after arriving, the kids hop in for school (no drivers license needed) and the car takes them to school. The car then returns home again so mom can run errands through out the day.

It will revolutionize our everyday lives.
