Subject: Fireball sighted
5/20/2006 9:50:19 AM Pacific Daylight Time

I was outside last night at midnight taking pictures of comet fragments and debris (which is not hard to do anymore) Jupiter, Vega etc. Clouds started rolling in and I was getting ready to wrap it up when at 12:55 am this morning a fireball came in above the clouds. I only caught a glimpse of it, didn’t have the chance to take a pic but it lit up the entire sky due NE of NE Philadelphia a bright greenish and blue. It lasted about 4-5 seconds max. Unable to confirm on the concams. I will report it to the fireball site. It was the same color as the one over Australia but not quite as big. I waited outside for another hour with the camera at the ready, but nothing else came.

Re: Fireball reports
Important when you see a fireball to give as many details as possible.

Then see if it shows on one of the concams at:
[link to nightskylive.net]

Go to the concams immediately to avoid an archive search.

No not that close but for a little one it sure was bright, anyone looking in that general direction would have seen it clearly.

Re: Fireball reports
It is hard to tell how big something is, especially when it is lit right up, when we don't know its distance away from us.

Mind you, I've only seen shooting stars, and haven't yet seen a fireball. I guess people that see them can get a sense of the size of these even if they may be streaking across the sky many miles away?

I only caught a glimpse of it before all I could see of it was the clouds NNE of here lit up bright greenish color. This thing lit up the entire cloudcover NNE of here. Judging by what little I saw before going behind the clouds and the way the flash in the cloudcover happened, I would want to say it was heading NNE, but I can’t be sure

I am under the impression that UT is five hours ahead of EST. If this is correct, this may be the slide that has the fireball. It is also consistent with the area of the sky that I saw this thing. It seemed to appear as I was looking north up our street a good bit below and left of Vega. Surprised the hell out of me, because I was certainly not expecting it. Look at this slide on the left side

Re: Fireball reports
I only saw a fireball once, and that was about a year ago. It was actually 5 or 6 small fragments all near each other and streaking outward, orange flames following them until they burned up completely. This was over New Jersey, actually very close to camden/philly area as well. The interesting thing about fireballs is the rate of speed and brightness compared to shooting stars. I witnessed a shooting star only once in my life..and it lasted..maybe a half a second..it was just a very fast streak where I happened to be looking up at the right place/right time.
