300-500 micro quakes a day at Bayou Corne

I really haven't been following this story too closely since I live in Michigan....but this blurb on my local news caught my attention.

BAYOU CORNE - There's a new concern growing in Bayou Corne that has residents and parish officials on high alert.

About two weeks ago the Assumption Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness noticed micro-earthquakes, also known as MEQs. They're earthquakes so small they aren't usually felt.

Since Saturday, parish officials have noticed a sharp increase in MEQs. When the small quakes started about two weeks ago, there were about 10 to 15 a day. This week parish officials have seen around 300 to 500 MEQs a day.

The cause of the mini-quakes is unknown, which is concerning for parish officials.

"We don't know what's going to happen cause there's nothing we can refer to that this has happened before," said parish emergency manager John Boudreux.

News 2 contacted Texas Brine, which operated the salt dome that collapsed beneath the sinkhole. They said this activity isn't unexpected, and it's part of the settling process.

Earlier this week two separate cracks were also found in the berms protecting the sinkhole.
