BREAKING: UK tidal surge alert!

Morning OP. I awoke expecting 60/75mph winds but not a thing so far. So what time is this storm supposed to hit? Getting a bit fed up of the Mets hyped up forecasts of late.

G'morning, bit gusty here in Lincolnshire, but nothing too out of the ordinary.

I get the feeling the alert is for throughout the next 48 hours.

I can remember the hype from a previous stormsurge warning in the last 10 years that thankfully fizzled for the most part, but major ones have happened before, the North Sea Flood of 1953 killed over 2500 in England, Holland and Belgium, so I guess its only a matter of time before it happens again, only so much you can do to fight mother nature, but to be prepared is always best I reckon even if it is a bit of a...

Winds just starting to pick up here now, not so bad as further North.

Still deliberating whether to go into town with the daughter but i'll wait and see how this progresses through this morning. Hate shopping at the best of times lol

I'm on the west coast and it's not looking too good over here either.

Northumberland is gusty and I've tried shouting at the rain to make it stop but so far with no success.

Probably just go back inside and have egg and soldiers and a mug of tea until it blows over.

Yeah I've got to brave it out and about shopping today also, but am inland by about 45 mins or so, its just a bit gusty here so far, though the skies were ominously red coloured at dawn.

Keep safe fellow Brits and keep an eye out on further tidal warnings in the next 48 hours. It will happen again one day.

Tidal waves/tsunamis do batter the UK on a 40(ish) year cycle... nearly all are storm generated meteotsunamis, and there have been some pretty impressive ones, the coast from Hampshire to Kent got hit with a 30ft one in the 1930s and one that hit Ifracombe in the late 1800s is guestimated at having a wave front of 100 feet... they do as much damage as a seismic Tsunami due to shape of the coastline.

So, yep, expect one, as Britian has not had a major one in the last 50 years

Even in mid Wales the wind is already pretty wild - this is bigger than the one we had a month back. I'm travelling up to the West Highlands overnight too... this should be fun.

I am on the coast in Essex.....the estuary is right on my doorstep - will keep you posted , am not sure what time high tide is but if things get too much I m heading inland to my parents house with my 10 year old boy......

It's getting pretty wild here in the central belt too. Watching the news its the main feature on the BBC.Sounds like Wales is getting hit quite bad, good luck with trip North, stay safe.

Fingers crossed that you miss the worst it, but I'd go inland sooner rather than later, if I were you... and shift as much as you can off the floor, just in case. It's meant to be overnight that you see the main part of the surge. Good luck.

They're raising the Thames Barrier too so it looks like the tidal surge could be quite bad. Anglia also have numerous flood warnings out, aswell as the Humber.

Yup, good catch, and whats equally or even more disturbing is the number of nuclear power plants that litter our coastlines including several all in the path of a North Sea tidal surge, and seismic activity from Dogger Bank off the east coast.

The mind boggles.

Is norfolk at risk from this surge ?

Sounds just the ticket! I've converted to Baxters soup this last few years, I flipping love that stuff in winter with a decent chunky loaf of bread.

Yup, in the firing line, you guys were last major alert I recall we had (similar time of year again from North Sea swells) maybe about 6 or 7 years ago now, they made a big deal of it on the news for a day or so in the run-up, but thankfully it fizzled and only some barriers were breached very minorly.

And a game of cricket followed by some cucumber sandwiches at 4pm, apparently from my travels overseas thats what we're famous for...

I live in wales now and the winds here are strong stronger than that storm 2/3 weeks back...

But my mum still lives in Norfolk level with the sea level on the outskirts of King's Lynn...

I live above the river Witham here in Lincolnshire, but thankfully am three stories up, so one would assume there will be no...



...unless the poles suddenly shift (and I don't mean the Polish people we have here).

No rain as yet, river level is pretty low, just a bit gusty thus far.
