it seems this kind of "pneumonic" plague is not new, and was already known by scientists, since they know a lot about it...

Good. I hope every human on the island of Madagascar die. Leave those animals to peace and evolution.

Interestingly, Madagascar was first settled by Polymesian people, and the royal family is still of Polynesian heritage .

Then came the Africans and it really went to shit.

I wonder if any of the personnel attending Mandela's funeral might have been exposed to any plague bacillus as they are, of course, returning back around the world. It's potentially a remarkable way of transmitting such a virulent disease.

5 stars, OP, pneumonic plague is a DEVASTATING disease that hopefully will not escape the island. Madagascar should be quarantined before it jumps to mainland Africa.

This is some nasty stuff: From the CDC

With pneumonic plague, the first signs of illness are fever, headache, weakness, and rapidly developing pneumonia with shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and sometimes bloody or watery sputum. The pneumonia progresses for 2 to 4 days and may cause respiratory failure and shock. Without early treatment, patients may die.

Early treatment of pneumonic plague is essential. To reduce the chance of death, antibiotics must be given within 24 hours of first symptoms. Streptomycin, gentamicin, the tetracyclines, and chloramphenicol are all effective against pneumonic plague.

Antibiotic treatment for 7 days will protect people who have had direct, close contact with infected patients. Wearing a close-fitting surgical mask also protects against infection.

A plague vaccine is not currently available for use in the United States.

I mean one day you feel sick, the next your coughing up blood but by that time it's to late to do anything the 24hr period is past to get antibiotics.

Wiki has it that the death rate without treatment is almost 100%
If this breaks out screw a n95 face mask. I'm going full bore half face respirator with hepa filter. Probably just won't leave the house.

Watch out for coughing people on airports in the region.
Its a fast disease, kills in hours to days.
Suddenly you are surrounded by blood coughing moribund.

So, what's the air traffic to and from Madagascar like, and where does it go?

Well.....per Lonely Planet it goes to a LOT of places...well...like...PARIS....Kenya, South Africa, Thailand, etc.

But I particularly like the route to Paris. Madasgascar looks like a great connecting point between a lot of differentt places - Africa, Europe and Asia.
