Travel, settle down, etc?? So basically, I left my job/career in October of 2012 after my mother passed away and moved to NM to get away from some psychologically manipulative family members.. and in addition, I'm simply tired of the "work, save, slave" paradigm. Quoting: AbsolveUsAll Fast forward to July of 2013, I meet THE woman of my dreams; partner, mate, best friend - a true blessing. We become very close and after a few months, she decides to move from AR to NM to live with me and upon my suggestion, retires from her job at a major university of which she had been employed by for over 20 years. So, we've basically spent the past year by getting to know one another better, traveling and basically indulging in our respective arts and creative outlets (music, painting, reading, writing, etc.). Now today, it's mid-January of 2014 and we're starting to feel the pressure to resume some semblance of responsibility, or rather, have some goals and plans for our mutually shared future. We have approx $350k-ish in cash. No debt, all vehicles are paid off and we are renting a home. No children, three dogs and a cat. We're a bit disheartened and discouraged by the idea of trying to worm our way back into the "system"; doing the 9-5 thing and essentially the "working to live - living to work", routine. So we're debating if we should just travel the country (tenting+camping), looking to join a commune (without religious prerequisites or drug/alcohol restrictions), moving to and adapting to a small town in Mexico and/or South America(?).. hell, I don't know. She's 46 and I'm 35. Anyway, we beat our heads together just about every day trying to figure out a plan of action and how to stretch our savings out - Any advice or suggestions on what YOU'D do with $350k and how to you'd make it work and last? Even if we were to buy a home on some fertile land with a water well, then we're sure to run out of money soon after, unless we both start working again, asap. Our rental home lease is up on 3/31/14, so we have approx 2.5 months from now to find another rental home and continue paying rent OR put all of our stuff in storage and travel the country/globe for "x" amount of days/years and just see how things work out. Perhaps going out on a limb and throwing caution to the wind here; we gain not only the experience of the adventure, but possibly meet some good people/the right community, etc. and everything falls into place, who knows? Thanks in advance to anyone who cares to offer up their $0.2 and give us any insight/advice on the situation. Cheers!:) If you were my brother, he would take that money and go move to Cambodia or somewhere in around them parts. You could buy a place for $5000 and live well happily ever after. Teach English part time. You'd be popular! |

Travel, settle down, etc?? I'm going to give you the best advice you will ever get: Quoting: Super Bowl Dave Go buy a web site. I cannot list the site that sells them, as it is a banned word, but just Google it. It is the top web site auction house, sort of like Ebay. Spend between $20,000 and $100,000 -- buy one web site, or ten. You will be set for life. Hire someone to run them if you don't want to. You will make between $4,000 and $15,000 per month, depending on what you invest. A web site with that price tag will be practically fail-safe. Buy ten smaller ones if you want to hedge against risk. Trust me, this is the best advice you will ever get. Do it. NOW. I shouldn't even be revealing this secret to everyone. He's right. Buy a website now. Internet and IT is the future. After 5 or 10 years, so many jobs will be dead. Computers will be doing so many things. You know computers will drive cars. We all will be using digital money like bitcoin etc. That's future |

Travel, settle down, etc?? What I have decided to do is this. To shed myself of possessions. To sell or give them away. I want liquidity wealth. My dream is to immerse myself in foreign cultures. I did this in the Air Force in Korea and it was the best time of my life. To have no worries about house and car and job. To experience new places and people. So first I will move to Korea and put money in a bank there. I already have money there but I want to add to it. You get good interest and I do not worry that the currency will collapse. (it is in won, not the dollar). From there I plan to travel throughout Asia. I want to get a Malaysia My second home visa. Teaching English is always an option. I want to make the last third of my life the best part. |

Travel, settle down, etc?? I envy you. I can build you a website like the failed obama health care one for 1.6 million and every time you want me to go in and fix or change something I will only charge 600k cause you know money is not everything in this world and I can be trusted cause your well being is in my heart and happiness is my middle name. Seriously though, Buy a nice used travel trailer, a nice used suv and travel the country. Stay south in winter and north in summer. When you find that place that brings that certain joy and all the happiness in the heart flows as you smile every day you find yourself within it, buy a small plot and build a 1200 square foot landing pad with a garden and tree's and a view for that is what you have available nw with what you got. It is true, get a website business and keep it simple with selling the very things in demand and have plenty of fun doing it. While traveling sell and barter stuff as you make friends and see the country and with the website you can login anywhere and drop ship from your suppliers as the orders flow in and life is good while you play out on the four lanes. Best of luck and remember, the hardest part is doing it for the first time. |

Buy a crappy conversion van with all the trimmings and a bad engine and hit the road. No destination whatsoever. You're headed over a very tall cliff, soften the landing a bit, if you actually want to survive. Or go back to the poodle farm. |

Compared to fiat currency Federal Reserve Notes which are guaranteed to implode someday, probably sooner rather than later. |

Travel, settle down, etc?? This is a no brainer. You have freedom, Use it. Build a small house, "Tiny House", 4-500 sq ft. Put it on a trailer. Or buy one, premade for a couple grand.. and travel anywhere you want.. with a home. If you decide you like a certain area, or state.. then stay for awhile. You don't need to have land, big house, mailbox, taxes, etc. in order to have a home. Just google "Tiny Houses" and you will see plenty of examples. Enjoy your freedom!! Never get bored!! Forget moving out of country.. too many regulations, etc.. like taking money or a car, pets etc.. is a MAJOR hassle which requires months of paper work, prep. |

So I'm currently renting month to month. I like the idea of being able to relocate at the drop of a hat. Plus I like the idea of just walking away if this place somehow gets destroyed. Figure with the scenario above, so for both of you it would cost you appx. $15-20 a day for food, less than $8k per year. The housing at $350 per month, less than $12 per day or $5k per year. Allow an average of up to $50 per day to indulge yourself in your cost of enjoyment in whatever cost effective exotic location that also gives you some level of security and safety and this will total up to $18k per year for your remaining cost to survive. So you have $8k in food, $5k in lodging and up to $18k in whatever else. A total of $31k annually to live life. If I was you I would find a vehicle to "invest" my $300k and get back at least a 10% return on the monies annually. I know they exist, especially in the right real estate reit type investment. There are quite a few private investor/lenders that like to use private monies also known as hard money and are happy to return a 10% annual return to you. Good luck and enjoy! |
