I've noticed that my house warms up to 68*F on its own during the day thanks to the sun. I keep thermometer down to 63*F. Last bill was only 110 bucks. I've heard of 3-7x worse for my neighbors because they set at 68-72*F. |

On the other hand, if dead wood doesnt burn, it generates methane and other decay products, so its better to burn it and make plant food than to let it rot and make methane and other useless gasses. All that said, I got this winters wood all for free from just down the road and I didnt even have to use my saw for most of it. We like to keep it about 75, you know, lingerie weather.... |

Granted we have a 1600 sq ft old house, and it's been cold as fuck!! But geez. Next months will probably be just as bad... I hope not. Anonymous Coward User ID: 3063399 United States 01/21/2014 12:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We are doing okay in Phoenix. Our usual winters have had a couple of sub-freezing nights. Most of us have electric or gas heat. But we have friends in Colorado who have a huge log house and propane heating. They filled up their 1000 gallon buried tank in late September last year. By January 1st they were refilling it again. Not a top-up. They were almost empty! Their boilers have been running almost non-stop from sundown to sun-up. Then it warms up enough to stay comfortable without full time operation of the radiant system during the daytime. This is the worst year they have ever seen and the propane prices have been over 3.35/gallon this year. The do not have natural gas. But they are thinking of installing an electric steam/flash boiler that will cost about the same per 100,000 btu/hr to operate as they now pay for operating the propane fired boilers. Seems unimaginable that propane and electricity could be approaching parity in costs, but they are! |

You may be surprised at how much potential heat cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and other food storage product waste has in it, and burning it with good airflow in a hot wood stove is clean because most of that wrapping, netting and packaging doesnt get recycled because its too small and it just gets buried to leach into the soil. Does anyone burn coal anymore? |

Overpriced 81. per ccf gas last month( I hate that we now must keep track of who we are paying and research who to go with when contracts run out) Just before my last reading I noticed snow melting around bathroom fan vents on the roof. Put plastic over the vents (easily removed in case of 'emergency') and have noticed the warmth and lack of 'cool spots'. I may not have changed 'suppliers in time to lower the price to 56 per ccf this month, but can't wait to see how covering those (2)4" pipes going straight out the roof effects my usage! Will know within the week, next reading is done tomorrow. |
