It really depends if he can whip up a frenzy with his own leadership I would imagine. If he can convince his leadership and military that he's right and just, then possibly.

Yes, MAD does still exist. I kind of hinted at that with the idea of someone who's completely emotional, angry, desperate, and losing health might simply just let er rip and damned the consequences. Nuke everything knowing there'd be a response. Never underestimate someone who may be willing to burn the whole world before they go down solo. If it got to a point where where a power like Russia or the USA was beginning to be treated like and suffering like N. Korean people and it was going to be bleak forever because the "enemy" country was doing it... You have two options, completely cave to the other side or fight back.

It's easy to say that Russia should consider the options offered to it by the West because from our point of view it's the right thing. But realize that what we're asking / demanding of Russia and it's people / leadership would be equivalent to the US caving to Russia. Are you ready to completely give into Russia ideology, demands, way of life, international policy, form of governance? Are you willing to capitulate and abandon your negative thoughts about Russia and abide with what they say? Because that's what we're doing to them. Right or wrong it doesn't matter. It's only "right" because it's how we view the world. In the end we are demanding Russia to bend to our will, to accept our unconditional terms and to allow us to continue doing whatever it is we do. We wouldn't accept it if those tables were turned, why should we expect them to? Just because Putin isn't doing what we tell him to do doesn't necessarily make him evil or even bad. He's simply opposite of our paradigm. Each country is going to look out for their own national interests and doing anything less you make them poor leaders. Both sides have legitimate claims and both sides have ridiculous claims and expectations. For the US to continue to survive it cannot allow another super power to emerge to compete with it's global dominance.

I don't know about you, but I rather enjoy my cushy life here in the States. I like being able to go to a grocery store jam packed with whatever I want to eat. I like our internet, video games, coffee shops, ability to fill up the tank and drive around. I'd rather not see that go away. So I kind of support the US in terms of messing up the plans of others that would try to disrupt our potentially great lifestyle here. If that means isolating Russia, fine, I'm ok with it personally. BUT, I do not try and fool myself thinking we're not actively disrupting things and causing chaos and enemies around the world.

I think if Putin can convince his people he's right and whip up a fervor he might convince them to go to war and to fire first.

However, Russia likes to play games and would much rather be in a position to have an even they can point to to give a military action what they view as international legitimacy.

Cold War in the early 1990s and the last 13 years, the American era with a "war on terror" has allowed US nuclear bases prioritized down. The trend worries more and more in the US as a lack of maintenance and declining morale among employees can have disastrous consequences for the whole world.

- the ruble is collapsing hard and in freefall nosedive and this will continue indefinitely,

- the Kremlin is growing more authoritarian rapidly by the day,

- rights and freedoms are being taken away at a record pace,

- the police state that already had the highest # of police per people of any nation is growing,

- a state of severe xenophobia is being cultivated by the Kremlin and it's controlled media,

This is all because of the desire of a little more than 100 elite Russian oligarchs who would rather try to maintain as much oligarch status, money, power as possible while the country falls into isolation, despair, and ruin... Instead of giving in, doing the right thing and ending the corrupt, greedy mafia kleptocracy that rules Russia(and was* also ruling Ukraine) and steals from the Russian people to maintain its power.

It is irrational for the people of Russia to sit back and allow this to happen, but that is exactly what they are doing.
